190D tank drain & screen???

Where is the tank drain and screen located on the 190D? The parts cataloge list a tank screen for the 190 diesels so I assume there is a fitting under the car on the bottom of the tank.

I got up under the car and all I see is the supply & return hoses coming off the bottom of the tank.

But there is another thing...about 4-6 inches long that sticks straight down fromthe bottom of the tank and has a strange nozzle looking end. I'm guessing this is the tank drain but how does it operate? How do you open the drain and how do you remove the screen for cleaning & replacement?

All the tanks screens I have seen pictured are at the fuel outlet location. If yours is the same, there should be a very large hex nut at the tank where the outlet line attaches. The screen is behind the hex nut.
That's a 124 chassis correct? I looked up the picture in the Performance catalog, and while it doesn't list the 190d, the fuel tank strainer pictured is like all the other ones.

It's a W201, and it has the same type of strainer as the other diesels from the '80s.

that picture leads me to believe I need to remove the fuel outlet hose and then take a wrench to remove the outlet fitting/nipple/barb and screen as a single unit.....

My last Merc was a wagon with a seperate tank bottom drain, not directly connected to the fuel tank outlet hose.

My W123 has that style strainer (with the hose screwed into the strainer base). It was frozen in there enough that I didn't need the 46mm socket to get the strainer out. I turned the hose fitting and it turned the strainer too. It was so clogged with junk I could see through it only in a few places.

On a W123, that is the overfill drain- there is a hole near the filler neck that drains down the hole and out the tubing. There is also a metal tank vent line that ends in a bell shaped rubber thing. They are on separate sides of the car. What side of the car is it on?

It's a fun job, that's for sure...

Fuel gets *everywhere* when the strainer comes out, especially if it's clogged and holding back several gallons.

See my thread about draining the tank via the return hose. Should stop fuel going everywhere (at least most of it).

New to the forum so Hi to all,

Does anyone know if these are fitted to the C250D (1994) saloon?

I removed the pipe close to the sender unit but could see one, despite half a tank of fuel only a trickle out of the pipe

TIA

Don't know for sure but all the Performance Products MB fuel tank systems show a tank strainer.

Previous replies should have gotten you there but; strainer nut is dead center of the tank. Biggest problem I had with both of mine was the rubber "boot" that covers that area, a super PITA to reinstall.

Good luck,
Jim

Thanks for the replies,

It may differ a bit form the W201, mine is the W202 (C250D)

This is the tank layout

I thought it could be part no 29 but i cant see this on the underside of the sender unit

This is the pickup, is there anything like a filter or strainer on the end of this?

Cheers,

David
