Glow Plug Light wont come on..
My 84 300Ds glow light wont come on, and therefore the car wont start. Is it normal for the glow light not to come on if the glowplugs are bad? Or can it be a bad fuse? I tried to take out my glow plugs but couldnt really reach them all that well. Any suggestions?

Have you #1 ascertained your 80amp fuse is not blown on the Relay and voltage is not making it to the glow-plugs?
And #2 that the dash bulb is not burned out?

Well, Im pretty sure its not the bulb. No matter how long I let is warm, I still couldn't get it to start, so Im fairly certain its the glowplugs. How to I check the relay? Is there anyway to start the car so I can get to the autostore?

Do you have a multimeter? if not consider getting one.....check for voltage at any of the glow plugs. If you do have it then you need to unplug the harness from the Glowplug relay and measure resistance of the glow plugs on a low scale.....look for shorts or higher than average resistance. I will bet you have one or more bad...... If you have no voltage to the glow plugs when there should be than you need to find out why.....if its a 126 I am sure there are plenty of people here with specifics.....that relay is different than my W116 chassis has. My glowplug light only works once in a long while, but starts reliabley even in the cold. (5 new glowplugs)

i have the same problem.. however my car starts.. and the glowplugs heat up... unfortunately.. the light wont turn on in my dash... i've learned to live with it for now.. i just count to 7-10 secs before i start it cold...
the bulb is fine.. it lights up.. my mechanic suggested that it could be the heater relay... could it be? is the function of the heater relay there only to stop the glowplugs after a 1 minute?? whatelse could i be worrying about?.. the runs and starts fine, if i havent made it clear.. ehhee...right now, i dont have the money to buy the relay as the shop said it is about 9,000 pesos.. or roughly $155.

Glow Plug Light is Dark
Hi everybody,
I have the same / a similar problem. When I bought this car a week ago the GP light worked, started like a dream. Since then, the temp here has really taken a dive (freezing) and now my GP light won't come on at all, no matter how many times I put the key in the "2" position. I replaced all 4 plugs, checked the wires, the 80amp fuse, etc. The plugs are all glowing and the car starts good (although I should really use the block heater on these cold mornings)...I can even hear the relay "clunk" after it shuts off. ...Could there be any other reason why the GP light refuses to light? The only other thing I can come up with is the relay / controller, which is a little too steep for me right now (after ~$50 for GPs) new, and a little too scary to buy used online. Maybe I'm too much of a perfectionist, but I would like to see this light work, even if it is a timer's rough estimation as to when the engine is ready for starting. Should I even be worrying about this? I'm no slouch when it comes to electronics...I've even considered hooking up a detector circuit to change this light so that it indicates when the GPs are on... |

Antipode,
Something is wrong with your GP relay. There is a post here someplace about someone who repaced electrical components in the relay, capacotors I think, and got it to work. Actually the light isn't that impoortant, its just a timer and bad GP detector. If U want to know when the GP are on, U don't need a detector circuit. All U have to do is connect the light to one of the GP wires and the light will illuminate when the GP are on. But the flashing function to indicate a bad GP might not work. U could test the detector circuit by disconnecting one GP and see if the light flashes after U start the engine. But, If the car starts OK, why goto all the bother? |
