Anyhow, with regards to the brakes; I get some bad vibration when braking, especially from high speeds. Aw, screw it - I think the whole front end needs to be redone.

If I called a shop and said I wanted the seals, motor mounts, and front suspension bushings replaced, and I offered them $1000 - would I be fair, would I be getting reamed, or would I be unrealistic?

Andersbenz and KAAdams - thanks for the kind words about the Benz. I'll let her know! She loves compliments!

All front suspension bushings will cost more than $1000 alone. Plus when you are down there you might as well do balljoints, tie rods, etc.

It's not a fun job, all the shop owners around here did not want to do it at all

What seals? Whats leaking? Re sealing an engine to me is removing it, breaking it down on an engine stand, and replacing all the seals. Which on a 20 year old motor would be a rebuild, and on a 617 thats about $5k to do right.

AFAIK doing the front or rear main on a 617 is a huge job, you have to drop the crank.

Front end a shop would probably charge you $2k for.

And brakes $500.

I am waiting till I need to rebuild my motor before any seals (like the rear main) get replaced....no way I'd pull it just to change the seal. I'll willingly add a LOT of oil before that happens. Now that I changed my oil pan gasket I don't seem to be losing a measurable amount of oil anymore, and my car doesn't leave a spot on the ground unless it sits somewhere for a few days, and even then its a small spot. Try changing the gaskets and seals that are easier to get to, you may be suprised how much of the leaking it stops.

Oil would have to be pouring out for me to do the front or rear main on a 617. No way I'm tearing into a 200k mile 25 year old motor unless its for a rebuild. My fix would be a long block from Metric.

Throw some stop leak in it, park it in the street, and use cheap oil. Its cheaper to add oil.

What about the transmission seals?

What would be needed in order to change the motor mounts? Aside from a jack and jackstands, what else?
