High Pitch sound in front wheel 240D

Have an 83 240d in great shape but have recently noticed a high pitched HUM
comming from my right front wheel. Between 0-20 it's hardly noticable but the sound increases in intensity and volume the faster I go. At 60mph, it sounds like a 4wheel drinve truck with oversized tire treads. I know it's not my tires as it's only from the right front. Can it be a bearing or brake caliper?
Any ideas will help me narrow it down. Thanks.

I just went through this with my 85. It too sounded like a snow tire
type noise. the noise varied with speed. even changed L/F tire with
another. finally pulled off the rotor to check the bearings, and the
large inner bearing was the problem.

The cage was starting to deform some. ordered the bearings from
Phill, had them the next day. now runs as smooth as silk.

Might as well do both sides if you have high milage. not that big of a
job to do.

Same problem on an SL. Bearing was pitted. Replaced both bearings and now all is quiet. Replaced both sides at the same time as preventive maintenance. The kit with bearings and seals only cost around $30 per side.

Be sure you replace the races when you replace the bearings. they will
come as a set. not a big job. I set the rotor on two 4x4`s, and used a
long punch to drive out the race. the race is a very hard metal, so it
will chip off the punch. had to use the grinder to flatten the punch. just
work your way around the race and it will pop out.

I used the old race to drive in the new one, a press would work if I had
one. I used a piece of 1/4 in aluminium plate on top of the old race and
a large socket on top of that & drove it home.

Took me a while to chase down the noise, thought it was the drive line
at first. now have new flex disc and new center support and bearing.
I was due for changing anyway.

use bearing grease rated for disc brakes. You can go to the dealership and get a tube of the stuff. Its properly weighed out for the front bearing job.. or you can just pack it in by hand with the stuff off the shelf.. put a little extra in the race area and drive

The inner race can be a SERIOUS PITA. You will need a good vise a sledge hammer and probably some heat.

heat... why would you want heat in an area that has very close tolerances?.. you want cold.. dry ice will slightly shrink the races making it a little easier to drive out the races

a small trick i found for getting races out of discs and stuff, if you have a stick or mig welder, lay a small bead on the inside of the race then just pop it out, trust me it works.

the mig trick is neat, but I just drive them out with a long punch.
putting them back it is very easy... just get the race installation kit from local auto parts place. less than 50.00 and they refund your money when you are done.
have fun.
