17 mm open end wrench will take off the injection lines, take them off and the world will seem to be a better place.

Guess I'm the only one that pulls the IP lines, my hands simply are unable to fit easily in that area. It takes me all of five minutes to save VAST amounts of aggravation and blood.

You guys must have big hands. Even I fit my bear claws behind the lines to do plugs.

I understand how you can loosen them with a gearwrench, but how do you install the new one and, more importantly, how can you possibly get the nut on the tip and start it with those lines in the way???

Finesse.
Seriously, they came out that way so there is no reason they can't go back in the same way. I'll admit though, I keep my magnet pen close to me and spare nuts in my toolbox. |

Actually, there is very good reason. Removing that small nut and making sure that it's not dropped is difficult. But, starting it with two fingers between the IP lines is damn near impossible.

Maybe for older people, but I'm young so I still have alot of dexterity left.

a little tip I picked up on this site... put the nuts on the glow plugs first, then put the glow plugs in the head. now clip the end of the loop connector on the wire for the plug and press the wire in, and tighten up the nuts!

How's that work out for you with eyelet connectors???

I do it with the lines attached and don't have any problems. I stick rags down between the block and IP/oil filter housing so if I drop something, it doesn't disappear. I did a compression test the last time I did this and put in the compression adapter at least twice into every glowplug hole. Not difficult.
I propose a contest: Two 123 617's side by side. Gearwrenches at 10 paces. Brian against Lance. Winner is the quickest with the fewest profanities and least amount of drawn blood.

i actually laughed out loud after i saw this. im actually only 18 and i usually just fit my hands around the injection lines, but im working on a 616 engine, if i were working on the 617 i would surely take off the lines.

You just need two fingers to get it started, it really isn't that hard. I have done it may times; I've dropped one or two nuts, never lost one. If you're concerned about the nuts, just modify the connectors so you don't have to install the nuts in place (I've thought about it, but never bothered).
