diagnostic tools

Anyone know what is best to plug into the system to get diagnostic codes? Something that doesnt cost $2k would be nice too.

There was a guy on here selling a STAR diagnostic computer for like $1100, earlier. Might still be available.

Sure did, thanks. I am also interested in knowing what the guys on this board use. They seem to be the ones with all the knowledge.

I have a 96 e300d, and have been using this gauge on a full time basis while driving. It connects right to the obd port, and requires nothing else to run. It gives you about 13 real time readouts while you drive, and will also scan and clear codes. It cannot scan the codes that require a MB scanner, but for the average user it can provide valuable data. It is also portable and can be used for different vehicles. I have no affiliation with the product, and am only providing information from actual hand on experience.

now that looks like a neat thing to have. Did you mount yours somewhere inside the car or just use it when you need to?

I just plugged the scangauge plug in the obd port, used velcro to keep the extra cable coiled and attached to the underside of the dash panel, and again used velcro to attach the guage to the top of the steering wheel post. Makes it easy to see, and also keeps it portable if I want to use it on my other car. The nice thing about it is that you can use the various color combinations to make the back lighting match the dash lights. I have used it to scan and clear the various codes that do not require a MB scanner. Works really well. The real time display of the various engine and electrical information is a plus.

For all you ODB2 folks check this one out. $169 is a heck of a lot cheaper than $2k. - http://www.scangauge.com/

Checks and clears codes, as well as gives you real time info on MPG, engine temps, EGT's, boost, odometer, trip, and tons of other stuff. They are pretty sweet, and pretty compact too. Do I sound like a salesman or what! A co-worker has one and it's pretty sweet.

$159.95 and free shipping in the US of A from this eBay seller....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330194522238

I just ordered one.

There's also this custom mounting jobbie...

but I don't think it will fit the W210 cars, not enough room above the rear view mirror. This company is just a couple of miles from my home, BTW, in case anyone has questions that require a visit.

Jeremy
