Why risk it at all no matter the warranty? A failed pump declined under warranty may cost you $2000 but a pump out of warranty will still cost $2000.

Top gear said the pump in that 330d takes 6 hours of shop time to replace, I'd bet that Mercedes is not much better. Even at a low $100/hr labor, thats $600 without taxes, parts, shop fees, or other required work.

Seems to me it does not matter at all if you do it before or after the warranty is up, its an expensive risk no matter what.

That engine would have probably lasted 300k+ miles on regular No2 diesel.
