None of my service manuals have any information on the transmission, so I'm at a loss to decide how much effort I should put into it while it's out while I rebuild the engine.

How do I tell when to replace the clutch disc? It's quite convenient to replace while the tranny is removed from the engine, but it's also kinda expensive and I don't want to spend money unnecessarily. Can I measure thickness with a micromenter to decide whether it needs replacing? Will a visual inspection be adequate? - Nathan '83 240D, 255k miles '00 New Beetle TDI, 25k miles |

There is a forked tool that is inexpensive you can get from your dealer. You put the tool through a slot between the slave cylinder and it's mounting surface. If the tool goes into a certain distance which is represented by notches on the tool, the clutch is thin and time to replace.

				Clutch replacement

Should you decide to replace your clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing and pilot bearing, the parts in FastLane are only $238.94 for everything.

Fastlane has prices for the parts...check them out. Then compare them to Modesto European....you will see how much of a difference there is.

				240D Clutch

			Hello Ed,

FastLane shows the clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing and pilot bearing for under $242.00 for everything. You need the serial number to get the correct parts. Thank you partsman |

Hi Michael, long time no hear. I like to use the word inexpensive rather than cheap. At any rate, it's no fun when the cars break down.
