Wink brought home another headache.... no keys....

well, i fell for a 85 123 300d. 217K, pretty clean exterior, no rust in MN!(seems to be from colorado, judging by the dealer badge on the trunk.)
very clean engine bay.

It was at a lot which sells impounds, etc. they had make an offer on the craigslist- so I did. they are delivering it to my home for $450. $45 more for a title transfer. it was a tow impound which was never claimed.

missing the grill/ headlight bezels, but the hood seems straight, and the lights are there.

will get pics up asap. but in the meantime, there are no keys. I know you can get them from the dealer, etc, but someone already ruined the cylinder, or at least the tumbler, by trying to use a screwdriver and big cresent wrench on it(which came w/ the car) so... I am not really planning on driving it this winter, but I do need to be able to move it around. I can start it, I am sure, w/ no key, but the wheel is locked.

so- seems like from reading, I will be having to drop the colum and drill/ grind out some pin? to remove it. or can I try to drill out the whole tumbler?? I would be fine w/ using a screwdriver/ etc for a lil while, so I can get it in&out of the garage as needed. is this possible??

I will prolly order new parts from the dealer when I get some extra $$ flowing after the holidays. I stopped in there, they said prolly $400, easy for all the parts- tumbler, keys, lock cyl., etc. they were nice enough to print out the page from the epc for me- but I dint get the PN's for everything.

Hopefully this will replace the wifes volvo gasser..... when I get it in top notch running order.

also- my link to the russian VIN site is dead. anyone got a current link??
WDBAB33C7FA224051

THANKS ALL,mo

If you can turn the tumbler you can remove the lock ring with the screwdriver and replace the tumbler and get a new key. You can either get the correct key set from MBUSA ($120 or so) or get a set for 45$ or so. I would do the first so you have only one key to open door and turn ignition as well.

[edit] I just started reading that list. If this printout is accureate that is one hell of a fully loaded car. Leather, inboard ski pass through, anti theft alarm... I have never seen an inboard ski pass through. Specially since that tank sits in the way. Contact MBUSA for a printout of what they have.

The steering wheel ended in the 70s check the date. Had to be factory alarm option.

O poo. rereading the ski pass thru that was for newer models. He just had grab handles on rear doors (с 01.11.1965 по 28.02.1986) but I have never seen that code before (the ski pass), perhaps its a new code in the system.

thanks- well, if that is anything like the russian club vin de-coder, they got a few things wrong. IAIR, the steering wheel looked normal. no ski whatcha thingy. leather- mabeee. it did seem different from my palomino mbtex in the TD, but the russian site called mine java? not palomino, which I am pretty sure that it is.

edit- now I see how to read the date code-duh!

I did not want to get to intimate or excited over the car at the lot. they would have seen dollar signs in their eyes. I played it like a parts car- hopefully it runds and drives. I have not even heard it run.

the lot mechanic told me he thought the IP may be bad- he had jumped the gloplugs and gotten it to fire, but then died right off- he did not unhook the vac shut off selnoid from the IP. I am sure the IP is fine... but I do have a spare

Anyways- time to get aquanted w/ the differences from an 84 to an 85. any tips?? seems to have different emissions / EGR crap.

It hurts my heart that the Russian site is of no use to me, since I have a '77.

As for the car... Congratulations. You must be as crazy as I am. I'm guessing you haven't heard it run yet. Or have you?

yeah- I guess I am gettin crazy- the last car I bought that I did not even hear run was free so, no I did not even start it- no battery in it, no key, etc. I do have the 3 yr old battery I just replaced in the TD, though. should do fine till next winter.

but, I got the fever. I have found a few decent MBZ for friends, but this one seems way cleaner(no rust) than any I have found, bodywise. So I couldn't pass on it, even though no one else I know is looking for one right now.

what i cant beleive is the wife said yes when I told her about it yesterday- w/ a $500 limit. which I just squeaked under.

i'm assuming you can get in the car. how are your junkyards in your area? i know a good locksmith, and i'm sure there are more of them around. if you can get just one lock out of your car, then you can get all the locks out of a junkyard car. you can have a locksmith re-pin the lock cylinders. I'm lucky my locksmith is my best friend's dad, known him since preschool days. when i needed some locks for my friends 123, we garbed some junkyard locks and he showed me exactly how he was re-pining the locks. very interesting.

your lucky you have a 123. the locks are easy to work on. the high security keys on my 126 need a tool like a small milling machine in order to be reproduced by a locksmith. my love for Mercedes, and the more and more high security keys being installed in cars, is influencing my friend. he should have the ability to make me a 126 key soon

so I looked over Russ's pics @ DG, and it looks like I drop the colum, grind the pin, pull the assy, and the wheel wont be locked anymore. right? then to try to dis-assemble the mess, and see what parts I need.

SirNik- I appreciate the tip. I dont have any locksmith friends around here, though. so I bet the cheapest option for me is to get a VIN matched key from the dealer. $30 for key set, or $120 for tumbler+ key. plus $200 fro the lock assy, and bezel/ trim+ $400!! total... but hopefully I can get it taken care of for less.

anyone have a 123 diesel lock Assy? w/ or w/o tumbler??

like I said earlier, At this point, I just need to be able to move it around the house- in n out of the garage(only a 1 1/2 car, so space is too tight to just park inside all winter.)

Can you turn the tumbler with the scredriver? If so there is no need for drastic measures. Turn to position 1 (or 2 I cant remember) and stick a bit of super skinny super stiff wire in the hole on the outside of the bumbler. I used a reaaaaally small eye glass screw driver IIRC. Wiggle the tumbler back and forth while pushing the wire in and you will find it goes thru when it hits the smaller hole in the tumbler that unlocks the collar. Unscrew collar, remove tumbler and work your way down.

^ yeh, maybe that will work. or maybe drill it a bit. at this point, I dont think I have anything to loose by trying to drill it if it wont turn.

I have a feeling the PO lost the keys- couldn't move it, tried to jimmy it, failed, and it was towed. at that point, the ignition is FUBAR'd, and it is in impound. cut yer loss's, i reckon.

well, I will know more as soon as it gets here....
