Its' Alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I am pretty happy now. The 1981 300TD I bought last night was a bit of a fishing expedition but fishing was good!

A friend and I went up and winched it onto a trailer and we ran by Wal-mart and grabbed a battery and much to our surprise pretty much started right up. I had to give it some fuel to get it to catch but after running it for a few minutes it was holding a rough idle.

Since I was at Wal Mart I had them put tires on it so two things down and 102 to go.

The majors I see at this point.

1. Brakes, no boost.
2. SLS still dragging but the reservoir is empty, quick fix if I fill?
3. One of the rear CV joint boots is split, it appeared to leak oil but I am thinking it may have been from the SLS? It looks a lot more like hydraulic fluid than grease that would be in a CV boot?
4. Car will not shut down when ignition is turned off, have to manually kill it from the engine compartment.
5. I have the helicopter noise in the passenger footwell.

Overall I am pretty happy, I bought what seems to be a reasonably functioning car for $1000 (which includes new battery and new tires)

Let the games begin!

Sounds like the SLS is leaking fluid. That's what your seeing.
You either have a bad vacuum pump, disconnected vacuum lines(s) or a bad brake booster. No boost and not shutting off are both indications of a vacuum problem. You'll need a MityVac to trace down the problem. Could be as simple as the line from the vacuum pump the brake booster being broken or cracked.

Is this important? I read the owners manual that simply calls for "hydraulic oil" no weight or brand listed.

Thanks again Kerry, I am going to pick up a mityvac today.

Thanks for the links on the SLS!.

The febi stuff is affordable. Dont chimp, SLS is the most expensive outside of an engine.

I have vacuum issues. Fiddled around with it and as far as I can tell, the only thing that is getting vacuum are the door locks and only three of the five work.

I detached two of the vac lines and you can't feel any pressure (or lift or whatever you would call it) at all.

The car is also surging at idle. I mean the idle surges and goes up and down maybe 2-300 rpms.

My airbox/can is not mounted properly and hangs down towards the left front fender well and the plumbing from the turbo is not attached securely to the inlet on the filter assembly. I would assume this is not very helpful if you are interested in boost.

I found what I think is the source of the helicopter in the passenger foot well. The exhaust pipe has a jimmy rigged bracket that is loose and rattling and I think the pipe itself is moving as well.

I should dump this car and run, but for some reason it is becoming a part of me.

Just to add to Kerry's post-- do a search here, you'll find the vacuum diagrams for your car.
