Black dash in blue car? (not about oil)
Ive been looking at this blue, plastic dash cap for quite a while thinking I'd run across a parts car with a good one but of course we all know finding an uncracked blue one is tough.
My question... would a black dash (might blend into the "all black consul") look really bad in an all blue car, which is a 79 240D, (DB903 "Blue"on the outside) and dark blue on the inside. I have a nice black dash I could put in, but... what do ya think?

I think it would look better than a badly cracked blue dash...

Yes, I agree, but the question was "would a black dash look good, or crappy in an all blue car" Or has anyone seen such a combo?

To the untrained eye itd be all but indistinguishable. You might want to make the under dash covers black as well.

Personally, I like a black dash regardless of interior color. I would put in the black one if it's not cracked.

![]() Good point on the under panels, that "sem aerosol" has really worked nice for me. I was even thinking of spraying the black dash blue, I should try it on an old cracked one first tho. I understand that "Shadow Blue" is the one to match the dark MB blue. Craig..The black dash is uncracked. This car is "technically "my wifes car" so if I screw I'm dead meat ![]() ![]()

I can relate; the blue interior SL has the plastic cover too. I put it on and it looks okay, but I don't have the heart to glue it down...

On cars with a black dash I have never seen black under dash/ kick panels. Now, since the solid black interior is very rare on the W123, they may have black kick panels. But normally, on cars with a black dash, the kick panels still match the car interior. Both my 240's have black dashes, but the kick panels match the interior color.
So, I would roll black dash with your blue kick panels. Should look fine....

All you have to do is buy a can of blue matching Vinyl spray paint. I have seen this and could not tell the difference. AA

How big a job is swapping the dash out? IMO I think the black dash would be fine.

Yeah, I was going to suggest spraying it with the SEM colorant to kae it the correct color, as someone else did above.

Lots of good input. Thanks, Now if I can convince my wife that the cap just doesn't get it. She didn't even want me to mess with her car too swap in the 5 spd, now she loves it. I think my best bet would be to paint the black dash blue, after I see what the color looks like, on an old kick panel or something.

My 240 has an all black interior, with black kick panels. Looks pretty good. I find you can see the dirt and wear on the palamino interiors a lot more than you can on the black and blue interiors.
I think the only drawback to putting a black dash in place of a blue one would be the center console would still be blue and since the console and the dash actually touch I think it would look funny to my eye. I like the idea of the vinyl spray paint. I find though that it rubs and scratches off fairly easily, but then all I have painted with it is rotten old plastic. So it probably does better on vinyl. As far as pulling the dash I did find its not too hard to do. A couple of hints from my experience. Remove the steering wheel. As well as the trim covers on the A pillars. This will make pulling the dash out a little easier, less obstructions. There are only 4 or 5 bolts holding the dash into the car, the tricky part is disconnecting all the other stuff like: headlight switch, e-brake chain, speaker wires, glove box light, etc... The FSM actually is pretty helpfull. It explains the process pretty well.
