Its really rather simpler. T before D means its a wagon, the T after the D was used in the late 90's before the CDI's came out to tell you it was a turbo.
Remember in Europe you could get a lot of these without fuel injection or turbo charged. Now everything is fuel injected, and every MB diesel is turbocharged. MB changed the badging system in 1994. So the 300E, or 500SEL became the E320 and S500. In 1993 it was the 300D, in 1995 it was the E300D.
