plastic cover on back of alternator

I am trying to replace the voltage regulator on my 83 300D. There is a plastic cover on the back of my alternator that I need to remove before I can acess the regulator.

There is one 8MM nut that is under the mounting bracket for the tensioner that is a PITA to get to. Ive tries a 1/4 drive ratchet with the 8MM socket, as well as an 8MM wrench. There doesnt seem to be enough clearance.

Anyone have any suggestions????????

Take a look at these photos and tell us what "cover" you are trying to remove. Does it look like these?

Here's a pic of the back of the re-man alt I had on my '82 300D. The VR, on this one fortunately, no cover.

I agree w/lietuviai & you. It must come off, and that cover has to be an aftermarket concoction.

that cover looks like the one on my 143amp Bosch alt that i put on my 91 300d and if it is a bosch it should have 3 small screws on the back and once the screws are removed the cover is just sort of snapped on,if i remember there are 3 places where you have to use a flat screwdriver to release the catch to remove the cover.I am pretty sure i could do it with the alt on the car now that i have seen how it is removed, but for the first time it will probably be better to do it on the bench. My $.02 Don

You may be able to remove that cover, but it would be a tight fit. Seems there are some nuts holding it on. Will need to be removed before you can replace VR.
Break it off? I don't understand it's purpose. If you have a NA engine, much easier to deal with.
Here's the alt in my CD.

Mines a turbo. But if I can get the nut off, I might be able to remove the cover without removing the whole alternator..... At least that is what I am hoping....

oldiesel may be on to something, a stronger alt.
Here's a pic of the VR I have on hand when the next one goes.
Removing the turbo "U" tube will help, were you to swap out alt, looks like that has been done, after viewing your photo. Not necessary to replace VR.
