Tranmission Help

Hello, I just purchased an 1981 300D that I'm having some transmission problems with. When I first start the car when its cold and put it into gear nothing happens. The car just sits there, it doesn't matter what gear I try. If I rev the engine the car will start trying to move a little, then after about 5 to 10 minutes of revving the engine at about 2k rpms the transmission will jerk and go into gear. From the point the car will drive but has trouble shifting (it waits a long time to shift gears and sometimes I have to move the shiftier between 2 and S to get it to shift). It also slips sometimes while accelerating. I do know the car has a few vacuum issue (the car won't turn off with the key). Do you guys think this might be a vacuum problem, or is there something wrong with the transmission. The fluid level is full and nice and clean. Once the car gets going on the highway etc its fine. Any help would be great.

Thanks, Cory.

Vacuum is not the problem

Vacuum is used only to modulate, (moderate) the shifting. If you remove the vacuum, by pulling the vacuum line at the transmission modulator valve, if the transmission is in good condition it will give you very harsh shifts. If your transmission is very tired, and they a get that way eventually at about 2 to 300,000 miles a rebuild or a replacement transmission might be necessary. Just make sure that your fluid and filter are as good as you think they are. A new filter and 7 or 8 quarts of brand new Dextron II can do wonders. I have also found that adding a quart of Lucas Automatic Transmission fluid has helped my transmission a lot. If you decide to add a quart of Lucas, make sure that you pull a quart of the existing fluid out first. Over filling is not good on any transmission.

Are you sure the level is good? Is there a good solid bead of fluid all the way to the full area? Not just residue it has to be a bead.
