Alternator ground wire keeps melting!

Parked my car in the driveway, next morning had juice but starter made no nothing! Replaced the starter (after testing at the parts store) after installation car started but smelled elec. burning. Now it melts the alternators ground wire as soon as the ignition is engaged?
Read some great stuff from this site and am looking forward to reading more! Never really had my heart touched by a car before but my '81 300SD MB Maryjane has captured a desire to keep her happy and healthy and around! She is a real work horse and I love the smell of the veggie oil (mostly like won tons) sorta like comfort foods! It makes me feel a lot better not supporting such a volatile industry too!

Sounds like you have hooked it up incorrectly.

I am trying to figure out what could have been changed on the alternator during a starter change... as mentioned, there is no ground wire on the alternator. all wires are positive. if you hooked a wire from the alternator to the frame of the vehicle, that would be your problem... more than likely, you have fried more than just a wire going to ground. I would bet the alternator is shot, as well as your ignition switch and some support wiring. fuses could also be suspect.
get someone familiar with your model vehicle to inspect the wiring. tell them what you changed... good luck with your joy car.
