you wouldnt even loose the headlamps. Only things youd loose are cruise control, tach, and climate control. Only semicondctor electronics can be effected by emp's. Headlights are just wires and switches, along with your windows and stuff. Pretty amazing machines

I have ran my 606.962 without an alternator for 12 miles to the repair shop. You get an annoying RED Flash on the instrument cluster (where the mileage, trip odo etc is). But it runs ok.

I've run from Southern Georgia to the northern tip of Kentucky with a dead alt/and battery that died about 40 mins after it got dark. MB roadside saved me with a new battery, which magically made my alternator start working again. (I think the brushes just made contact again from shutting down the engine and starting it again). It went right back up to 14V and got us home + lasted another 4,500 miles before it went dead (fell to 12.4V) here in town while I was cruising around, so I promptly went home and replaced it (June)...over 3 months after the initial problems.

Inspection of old alt revealed severely scored slip rings and almost no brushes left.

Definitely a worst-case scenario!

Depending on the distance from the event, the driver might not do too well but the engine would be unaffected.

Made it from Memphis to St Louis (~300 miles) with dead alt. Didn't know it till the radio had quit working from quickly draining battery. Idiot light never worked? Oh yea it was also quickly turning dark. Made the last 20 miles in very late dusk with parking lights barely on, I figured that was why everyone was honking and flashing lights at me ...either that or they hated the smell of diesel fumes
