best wipers W123 300TD wagon

Dudes,

Does your pass. side wiper hang off the glass for the farthest right 3 or 4 inches?? I'm beginning to suspect these are not the intended wipers for my car....The driver's side wiper is flush up against the glass, but fails to wipe for the 3 inches or so closest to the edge of the windshield.

What wipers work best on the 300 TD? I tried a search here but didn't get anything definitive. I also priced out some on this site and at ***************. The latter just had insert replacements (not the metal + insert). I'm not a purist, just want something effective without paying a ton. $48 is a bit high, but if that's what you have to pay to get wipers that actually rest up against the glass, I guess that's how it goes...any other options???

Thanks again,

Get a 21 inch drivers side blade, and no more than 20 on the passenger side. A 19 will work fine also. They do hang off the side alot and then they bend and wear out quickly if you go with the longer blades. Blades are like $7 at wal-mart, and my passenger side get a cheapo that gets changed often. The driver gets a Bosch 21, and the tailgate gets Bosch rear wiper- I forgot what size.

The rear wiper is 18 inches.

I have 20 inch wipers on the front windshield. On a side note has anybody used the Bosch Icon or similar (Valeo maybe) wipers on a W123 that have no metal arms but are just the "newer" type wipers?

I use bosch microedge. 20" on both fronts, as I scored a case of 10 for $35, delivered from ebay. good wipers, and they fit all of our cars.

the pass side will always hang, look at the curve of the window. do not go with longer blades on that side, they will just hang more.

The wiper arms are spring tensioned, and you can do a bit of preload adjust by carefully putting a bit more "arc" in the arms.

Nope. Yours shouldn't hang off the window either.

When I was looking for my TD, a few of the vehicles I passed on had signifcant wear marks, paint damage, etc, from a poor fitting passenger side wiper blade.

OK sd300td, I agree with you, I do not want this problem--in fact, I want to solve it! It would help if you included the type of wipers you use (or your knowledge of which ones fit best) since you're obviously aware of this issue.

The only response that has offered a solution is MTU power's. His advice is to go with a 21" driver's side blade, and a 19" (maybe 20") pass. side blade. Is this how you solve the problem, sd300td??

Curious,

Curious,
Sorry. They're Bosch blades. I'd have to get a tape measure to be certain of the lengths, but I'd guess 19" or 20". You just need to get shorter blades and probably arms as well.

I didn't solve the problem, just bought the car in June and it had proper blades installed already. I'd be very surprised, dumbfounded in fact, if MB originally spec'd these cars with different sized wiper blades.

Curious to find out since my blades are getting ready to be replaced...

I'll put in a shameless plug for the TripleEdge wipers. I have had the same blades on my Ford Explorer for over twelve years and they still work like they're brand new. In Seattle, I need wipers a lot. I had also put them on my parents' Subaru Outback and Peugeot 505 and each time I've been impressed.

Of course I put them on my Mercedes right when I bought it. They retrofit the existing holders. The only drawback I've found with the TripleEdge blades is they squeak a little, especially when the windshield is somewhat dry....but it's worth it to me for the perfect visibility.

One thing I've noticed is that sometimes older wiper arms get bent a little or the carriage that holds the wiper blade rusts and doesn't flex freely. Making sure the blade fits the curvature of the windshield throughout the entire path of the wiper's movement is critical and can be an issue when you use longer blades.

BTW, windshield wipers on Mercedes always fascinated me. On the older cars, both wipers faced toward each other and wiped outward. The W116's have the really cool stacked wipers, both wiping from the same side and wiping sequentially across the windshield. I love those! And the W124's have the big mono wiper. Then those with Euro headlights or newer Mercedes might also have headlight wipers.

thanks for the tip on those w116 ones, what a trip!

for those not googling: the wiper axles are only a few inches apart and the blades stay parallel to each other. i guess this is like a double monowiper, where most area gets swept twice at once. cool design.

Anyone here know if the '87 was shipped with an oem blade that you can just get refills for like my '94 cabrio did? I'd prefer that over the expensive blade I buy

I am using Michelin 20-inch blades I got at Costco and they have more spring/flex than the previous wipers that were on the car, which had the 'hang' thing going.

The Michelins work very well and don't have the hang thing happening.

^^ I beleive all W124 OE wiper blade metal frames have replaceable rubber liners. I have my old wiper blade with a replaced rubber liner but the Bosch marathon frameless wiper blade I installed on my car a year ago still works very nicely. It looks out of date on a W124 though.

My 81 and 82 still have the OE squeegee holders. Ill try to measure them. My old 83 had an incorrect one fit to it at some point, and there was a bad contact patch on that side.

Personally I choose PIAA whenever I can, as the Si blades last longer and work better. Plus the squeegee holders they provide if you dont just buy the refills are of higher quality than others.

I was told that the best blades for our Mercs are the original ones that can be refilled. I wonder if anyone sells those still and how much they cost...
