Yes, I understand.

I've been trying to get someone to run mine...

vin#1GKCT18W1SK534302

However, nobody can do it for me, because of the rules of the forum....and some supposed Carfax conflict of interest, or something like that..

LOL

Have you tried contacting MB for a service history? I'd start there. Not sure how good their records are though.

Carfax

The last car I bought was run through Carfax, it did a pretty good job of tracing the car's history. The previous car was missing a whole bunch of information. A year after I bought it, Carfax still didn't show the transfer of title to me. I complained to Carfax, they sent back a whiney email that really didn't say anything.

These checking services are a little bit like title insurance. The risk for them is almost zero, since they have to pay off only if (a) something is on record and (b) they didn't see it.

On the positive side, it wouldn't be easy for one of us to call every DMV in our country asking for them to check a VIN. If it were even possible, it certainly wouldn't be a good use of our time. Better to pay Carfax or someone else to discover that the for-sale "rust-free southern car" actually spent 20 years in the New Jersey salt marshes.

Speaking of which, I have seem some amazingly rusty vehicles come from coastal California locations -- Santa Cruz, Pacifica, etc. West coast origination is no guarantee!

searching out of country

I have been communicating (not real well) with the seller via email. I suspect there is a bit of a language barrier and phone may be even less efficient.

So the seller gave me WDB126201A063323 and as has been pointed out this number is 1 number short. The seller now tells me that this number is different because the car originally was sold to Japan, but is now registered in B.C. (Canada) and there is no problem with the number.

It looks to me like Carfax is good for the US only. There is a service in Canada called carproof, and a lot of othersites that link to 'Autocheck' who like carfax require a 17 digit number and won't work for me. I haven't found a way to search out Japan or wordwide titles.

It's looking to me like I may have to fly out to look at the dang number myself. One of the reasons this car may not have sold is that the seller is not great at communicating! I'm having him fax me the present registration and I'll take it over to the RCMP office and see what they say.

I like this idea. How about we write our State and/or US reps to make it happen?

OH, That vin is for the 1995 GMC Jimmy I just bought. Not that a Carfax would really do me any good, because I already bought it, and have been driving it for nearly a week. Better late than never though, and I must say, I am very curious about it's past life whether I'm stuck with it now, or not.

MB serial numbers

So I finally got the correct serial number from the seller (he had dropped a number in the middle and it was one number short of the needed 17 digits.) And all that Carfax says is imported from Japan. -never registered in US.
I guess in this case no news is better than bad news. Not a victim of a flood or anything.
Guess I'll have to go have a look see

I'm curious what the Russian site would show about the car from the VIN.

with our hosts as asking someone to run the numbers for you is a nono. Besides I have run the numbers but you could post a link to the Russian site I am sure.

Running the VIN# at the Russian club website is OK, all you get is base factory option data.
http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb.asp

Doing a title search (CarFax, etc) is against the rules.
