Has anyone had trouble re-installing the turbo on a 300SDL?

i've removed and reinstalled everything up to the first mixing pipe that connects to the top of the turbo and cannot seem to get it all lined up correctly. The piece that the EGR mounts to, between the turbo and the intake crossover pipe doesn't even line up with the turbo. it's easlily 1/2" off horizontally and the pipe with the circular seals will not even go in much less could i expect it to seal. What's the deal?

The reason i removed all this in the first place was because of all of the oil collecting on the top of the turbo and eventually into the driveway. i thought the turbo may have been leaking but i wanted to avoid a rebuild and try replacing all of the seals and gaskets first.

any help would be appreciated.
