616 engine swap.

AFter alot of people asking for a complete (or as complete as i can) engine swap guide, i finally had the things i needed to do it ( A camera and a car that needed it) So here it goes, ill put number next to the paragraphs to show wich picture it corresponds to. (Example)

Blah blah blah bluh blah (1)

OR

ill just link it right after the paragraph.

Well to start it all off ill show you the cars that im working on.

My first car, 1981 240d 4speed.

Well what i did first was take the engine out of my wrecked "baby ****" (lol thats what my boss called it) yellow mercedes and put it into the pearl black one. and this is what i did...

First i unhooked the throttle linkage and idle cable.
http://picasaweb.google.com/cervanz/Pictures3/photo#5156359419596890322
Next i unhooked the in and return lines.
http://picasaweb.google.com/cervanz/Pictures3/photo#5156359320812642418
Then while i was there, i unhooked the heater hose and the powersteering lines.
http://picasaweb.google.com/cervanz/Pictures3/photo#5156359453956628722
http://picasaweb.google.com/cervanz/Pictures3/photo#5156359368057282722
Next i unhooked the glowplugs and temp sensor (Remove cover on relay to get to the 4 pin socket and the temp sensor has a connection right below the relay)
http://picasaweb.google.com/cervanz/Pictures3/photo#5156359333697544322
This is when i would tell you to remove the radiator but.. obviously.. (see picture) Two connections with clips to the front, just use a screwdriver and pry them up and off.
http://picasaweb.google.com/cervanz/Pictures3/photo#5156359402417021122
Next i took out the battery getting ready to take out the bolts that hold the car to the tranny (Now there are two ways to do this.. take the tranny with the engine out Wich is easier but more time, and then you can just take out the engine wich is harder (Only because you gota hump the engine to get it to seat) but its quicker)
http://picasaweb.google.com/cervanz/Pictures3/photo#5156359226323361826
next i unhooked the exhaust 2 bolts hold a flange.
http://picasaweb.google.com/cervanz/Pictures3/photo#5156359501201269010
So now im under the car getting ready to remove the motor mounts and bolts on the bellhousing when i notice this.. dont that just piss you off? (I.E oil pan bolts broken off into block)
http://picasaweb.google.com/cervanz/Pictures3/photo#5156359539855974706
(Sorry to jump around i just saw that and had to put it up..) Anyways, i didnt take a picture of it but there is also a heater hose that goes to the engine on the passanger side. remove that.

There is also an A/C clutch wire that i cut because the compressor is fried, remove that if you wish.

Then remove the main vaccume line that goes to the vaccume pump, 17mm bolt on the brake booster, or 3/4 on the pump. (remove associated tubing as well)

Allright i belive were ready to get under the car and have some fun with grade 8 stainless bolts! (yeah right fun..)
First you need an 8mm hex bit for a 1/2in (Pref 1/2 not 3/8 but whatever you got on hand is best) You want to pound this bit into place with a hammer make sure its seated well because if your strip this head you are screwed. I took it one step further after pounding it in and heated the motor mount casing from above (see pic 2) (Pic 3 is the right side motor mount)

Next there is a motor mount directly below the engine two 14mm bolts hold this mount to the alluminum oil pan.
http://picasaweb.google.com/cervanz/Blonga/photo#5156352401620328098
Next i started removing the 4+ 17mm bolts that holds the engine to the tranny.(pic 1-3) Then i had fun with the two special 10mm hex starter bolts (Pic 4)

After those are out the engine should be ready to come out, time to get your chains out. The way i hoisted mine out was with a 4000lbs cherry picker and some chains. i used the factory lift points and the bolts that i removed from the bellhousing.(Chain pics 1-3 Hoist pic 4 wrong car same thing though)
