are you closer to boone, or hickory? there is quite a bit of distance between the two... and quite a bit of twisty mountains... I am on the opposite side of hickory, in Gastonia at the moment, from what I hear, a 240 starter is a MAJOR pia to change. would a starter from a 300 fit? I have two N/A parts cars, if you need something... let me know. PM me for contact info if ya do.

I've got an appointment with the MB dealership in Hickory, and a rental car on the way presently, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal.
My car is actually on the side of Sugar Mountain in Banner Elk right now; my body is in Boone and the dealership, Hickory. Yay! FWIW, I think a 300 starter would work on the 240, the MB Parts guy said "well its a 123 123 car so I don't need the VIN any more"

well if the price on the MB Christened starter is too much for you to bear, and one of mine from the older 300d's will work for you, AND you feel like driving another 45 miles one way to pick it up,... let me know.

Brian has a good point, the hills in sugar mountain area should be plenty long to get you rolling, if not, you could get somebody to tow you up to about 25 mph, and then you pop the shifter into l and it should fire right up.

Not to mention with a 240 starter all the work can be done from the top! {speaking of priceless!} I just had to loosen and swing away the lower air cleaner bracket to get the starter in/out. It literally took me 20 minutes start to finish. {uh, that was with warm weather fingers, though}
**edit** I see your 240 is an automatic. I don't know how much the tranny dipstick tube gets in the way of this job....

Was about 5 F this morning. I don't think I'll even try to start/stress my 240D today. Might check some local autoparts stores tomorrow to see if I can get one of those lower-hose engine heaters.
Happy Motoring, Mark

I'd see if you can find someone to pull start you then just leave it run
Change out the starter when you get home. Mix in some Power Service anti gel stuff in the fuel tank. |

This is counterintuitive advice when compared to gas engines, but on our diesels, it is not effective in cold weather to try to start them in 10 second bursts. You need to keep it cranking long enough to build up heat in the engine and even keep the starter engaged as it starts firing on one or two cylinders. It describes this procedure in the owner's manual.
In very cold weather, I glow 2 or 3 times, engage the starter and keep it turning until it will run on its own. At very cold temperatures (35 below F) without a block heater, I've cranked for over 45 seconds to get it going.

45 seconds of battery power at that temperature is an unrealistic expectation. |

It worked and it ran until the gelled fuel stopped running
Without a block heater at really cold temperatures, I look at it this way. After I've glowed and turn the key to start there are only two possibilities. I will keep cranking it until it runs or the battery dies. There's no second chance.

Then it must produce way more than 100 amps!!! |

100 amps is a lot to a starter, especially when boosting a decent battery. keeps the volts upwards of 13 or so instead of dropping down to 8 or so on a heavy load. most decent chargers have a 225amp start setting. but the 100+ units sure do help start a cold block!
the 1000CCA batteries are not putting out 1000 amps, if they were it would melt the cables and the battery posts... 1000 cca means it can collectively handle 1000 amps of load over 1 hour IIRC... so 16 amps continous for that hour... most starters pull around 60 at full load.
