Help! 1980/81 Mercedes Diesel
Hello All,
Here's my situation. I bought an 81 240D and siezed the enigine about 20 minutes after I bought it, a terrible experince. I'm thinking about buying a 80 300SD turbo disel automatic. Is the 81 240D trans (and all other parts beside the enigine) interchangeable. They look almost identical to me, same body, interior, etc. Open to all ides. Thanks! |

Very little transfers over.
I have to ask, how did the engine seize? Oil leak?

similar body, but not even close to same.
116 chassis v 123 chassis, the transmission should be similar, but may require parts swapping to function. the 116 body was VERY prone to rust, so be carefull there too.

Any ideas on weather I should try and fix/find an engine or just look for another older Mercedes to try and convert to grease? I bought the car for $900 so, all in all I'm not out that much but, it still stings a bit. The worst thing about it is the fact that I heard from a few folks how bullet-proof the old 240D engines are. Just my luck, I kill one in about a half an hour! |

Man, that has to be some kind of record. You have my sympathies. I think I would try to swap in another 616 engine as that is the simplest fix. However, the only drawback is that you'll still have a 616 engine. The turbo 617's are far quicker. If you're thinking about putting the 80SD engine in the 123 240d car, it is doable but more work than swapping in a 616.

Kerry is right. Find a 240D engine and swap it in. I bought a wrecked 240D before I ever actually needed the engine, then bought a car with a seized engine for not a lot of $$. They are out there if you aren't in a tremendous hurry. It is not cost effective to rebuild......

I know of a 240D with an engine in it that was rebuilt about 30k miles ago. Let me know if you are interested. The complete NO RUST car can be purchased for less than the rebuild cost.
