Stupid Alternator Question number 1001

I'm having to tighten the alt. belt on my '80 240D about every 2 weeks and can't think of a rational explanation for the slippage. If I put any more mustard on that pivot bolt I'm gonna stretch it to breaking point. Anybody got a good explanation for this phenomenon?

What kind of locking mechanism do you have? One kind is the threaded bolt on top attached to the nut of the top adjusting bolt. The other is the geared mechanism on the bottom adjusting bolt.

I'd try a new belt.

Make sure you've it tightened down, otherwise, as others have mentioned, new belt, doesn't make sense tho.

This happened to me... if the belt is too narrow it will start to rinde down the pulley groove and loosen up. As it does this it burns the edges and get narrower each time you tighten it. Make sure you get a replacement that is 15mm wide. I had bought the narrow belts at the dealer and they had the same part number as the ones that I replaced so you have to really get out a ruler and measure the belt width. My local NAPA had belts that fit correctly and I have not had the problem come back

ditto.
also be SURE you are tightening the three back bolts on the alt. the tensioner bolt is just for setting tension, it CANT hold the belt tight.

This sounds correct. The belts for the two belt system on the turbodiesels is narrower but the diff is very hard to see.
