drivetrain shuddering noise during acceleration from stop

hi everybody,
So far this hasnt caused me any problems, but i have a feeling that it eventually will and im just wondering what it is.

in my 1991 300D 2.5, often when i hit the throttle from a dead stop, especially going uphill, the car will make a noise and it will hesitate slightly. The noise is a kind of a shuddering noise that lasts for about 1-2 seconds, originating somewhere in the transmission or the rear diff or somewhere in between.

Its starting to get pretty annoying, whenever i have someone in my car they ask "what was that??" The noise doesnt seem to be getting any worse, i would say it started around 2 years ago, the diff has been looked at since then so i dont think its there.

let me know what you think!

thanks

Check the fluid level in the box. I had a similar sensation when mine was leaking and the fluid ran a litre low.

Check the condition of the rubber flex disks at both ends of the driveshaft.

I'm guessing it's the driveshaft mount. Though you should ideally check out all of the components underneath the car. Does it only do it when accelerating through the 1-2 and 2-3 gear shifts?

it only does it from a dead stop, and only when i accelerate pretty hard. it doesnt do it at all once the car is under way.

ill get around the checking flex discs et. al. but right now i have a fuel issue!

thanks

Nope!

wrong again! or, rather i was right the first time. the only gear that was busted was the reverse. the tranny shop said all the others were fine so i didnt need a full rebuild (whew!).

it still does the shuddering thing, but not as much. even the couple weeks before the reverse went out it seemed to be getting better. now, if i want it to make this sound i have to really punch the throttle.

no idea, the shop checked the flex discs, so maybe its the diff?

thanks

nope, those are new. at this point, the only thing i can imagine is that its something in the diff, like the gears are grinding back there (of course, i dont have a very good imagination!). Is that possible and what would that sound like?
