I seem to recall a past post in which someone claimed some portion of the clatter was coming from the IP.

My understanding is the sound is closely related to the "pinging" noise you sometimes get on a gasoline motor. On a gas motor it is usually caused by
a hot spot in the combustion chamber in which it actually ignites the fuel which is called pre-ignition. At roughly at the same time the spark from a spark plug fires and that fuel ignites. The resulting dual explosions meet head on with each other and smack each other into oblivion! And then create that pinging noise. You can ruin a gas combustion chamber if the pinging is severe enough. Running a higher octane will slow down the combustion and prevent pre-ignition.

On a diesel, I understand it is the same way. There is a little bit of pre-ignition going on, the the resulting multiple explosions are causing that distinct clatter. A diesel is also built to withstand that type of combustion.

I have to agree with that. Some of the pulsing sound comes from that.

some might.. I disassembled a 617 IP. There is a portion off the cam that is within the governor assembly that has this big(well.. to me they were) fly weights.. Those were the RPM limiting devices I bet...

kinda like the ole brass ball fly weights on steam engines

The 1.5L in my Toyota with a Cherry Bomb on it sounds powerful, or should i say just as powerful as the Charger. but we all know its not.

the sound of power is all an illusion. but, that said. something about the diesel sound makes me think power, i think its in my genetics like the sound of a stake on a fire makes me hungry.

the Mercedes diesel specifically has its own sound. I've been in crowded parking lots and i can hear a Mercedes diesel from hundreds of yards away.

when i got my 240D i was in love. mainly because the 4 cylinder sounds exactly like the 4 cylinder in my dads John Deere. and you know what the say "Nothing runs like a Deere"

suppose thats true because nothing runs on the 240 anymore.
Nice comparison. When I heard the 300SD at school the first couple times I turned around expecting to see my uncle's JD 2020 showing up. Exact same sound...

I always liked the sound of a Mercedes Diesel way before we ever owned
one. They just Purr, and have that sweet sound. there can be one some
where in a parking lot and I can detect it.

I always liked the moan of a Detroit Diesel, that is a sound you won`t
ever forget. I use to drive a dump truck with a 6V53, needed ear plugs
when riding in it. those Detroits are real screamers.
There was one that had the 8V92 with a 13 speed, load that thing down
and nothing would stop it. but they were quieter.

It`s amazing how all the different diesel engines have their own sound.

I tell people, when your gasser sounds like mine, you better fix it.

The combustion process takes place over a much shorter period of time rather than a long burn such as in a gas engine. Since the pressure happens all at once, or as a pressure spike, it sounds like a hammer hitting metal.

I never heard one. But then again, why not?

I actually saw an ad for GUNSHOT ringtones!

I think it came up on an Off topic discussion that was about guns or something.!!

Just amazing. I thought I had heard everything. Clearly, I had not!!
