PLEASE HELP!!!

Was referred over here and I've got a question.

I've got a 1987 300D that is ultra SLOW. I keep hearing about the "in tank fuel screen" yet I can't find it.

I converted the car to run on VO. It's only run a couple of tankfuls, and it's been CLEAN VO. Not waste VO.

The first couple of tankfuls ran great. No power loss, nothing. Then it became a dog.

Does anyone have a picture of where this "in tank screen" is and how to get to it?

When I converted the car, I removed the line that goes from the tank to the front to replace it with a larger diameter hose, and there was no screen there, so I'm wondering if I've even got that screen.

That screen screws into the tank, then the hose screws into the screen.

Fuel filters were changed. Brand new. When the power loss happened, I replaced them. Nothing changed.

On the 87, the hose screws into the tank. There isn't anything in between.

Look at the point where the hose screws in. You'll see a large 46mm nut outside the hose. This is the tank screen. All you see is the nut. The screen is completely inside the tank. You'll need a 46mm socket or a 1 13/16" socket to remove the screen, unless you get lucky. If you try and rotate the nut on the fuel hose, and the entire tank screen unthreads from the tank, you're all set. But, this may, or may not happen.

I have an 87 300D tank in my shop, didn't see any large nut / tank screen on mine, I removed the tank, there were two lines to the bottom, both regular rubber fuel lines with screw-clamps holding them to the metal nipples coming out of the tank.

It's there, trust me. The screen assembly screws into the bottom of the tank, and you need the 46mm (?) socket to unscrew it. If you're brave you can just remove the screen entirely, and keep a close eye on the prefilter by the injection lift pump.

The 124 diesels have two drain points in the bottom of the fuel tank. At one point, closer to the right (passenger) side, is a single connection for the fuel feed to the engine. There is a rubber dirt cover over the 46mm nut that must be released to remove the screen. At the second point, closer to the left (driver) side, is a similar drain point with two connections. One is the fuel return line from the engine, the other is a vent. It also has a rubber dirt boot. This second one is the one babymog saw in his shop.

Hi guys,

Thank you to everyone for your help. I finally found the in tank fuel screen. Was dirty, but not totally gummed up. It did seem to have a thin "film" on it. I removed the thing entirely. I'm running a heated DAVCO fuel filter assembly because the car is running on VO.
