I feel its my right to shop in OR for all the years I got raped by OR when I worked in Portland while living in WA. I had to pay OR's sizable income tax but I could never vote on issues that affected me while working there. It's called taxation without representation. There was a war fought over that issue many years ago.
Yeah, why don't we dump all our engines in Olympia in the capitol plaza if they pass a ludicrous tax like taxing the displacement on engines.
*********s!

I'm confused, who made you work in Oregon and live in Washington?

I had to work in Portland because of a lack of an available job in WA at the time in my profession because of the business unfriendly attitude by the local ********* legislators in WA.
The organization I worked for decided to move from Vancouver WA to Portland OR because of the stifling rules and regulations that were being imposed on them by WA.

If you look around, you'll find that this kind of taxation is pretty standard for most states. Typically, you get taxed where you live AND where you work. I guess you guys were lucky that WA doesn't have an income tax... otherwise, you would have been hit up twice (live in WA / work in OR).

That is why I asked my question. I used to work in Massachusetts with some people who lived in NH. They were always *****ing about paying MA income tax. New Hampshire didn't have and income or sales tax at the time. I always told them it was a free country and they could get a job in NH or move to MA. I guess it's easier to blame the government.

Ms. Cantwell

I have recently become aware of Senate bill 6900 relating to the tax of vehicles based on engine displacement. As a Civil Engineer, and husband of a Washington State Department of Transportation employee I am aware of how important funding for the State’s roadways is, but I believe that the State’s roadways are receiving adequate funding through the 2003 “nickel” funding package and the 2005 transportation tax package. Together these funding packages have or will fund 432 projects over a span of 18 years.

As an automotive hobbyist I own several older vehicles which are rarely driven, but would cost me an additional $1075 to register under the proposed bill. If and when the time comes where the current tax packages are not adequate to fund the states transportation system, I propose that another “use” based tax (such as a mileage or fuel tax) is enacted, rather than a “blind” tax such as the proposed displacement tax which needlessly penalizes vehicle owners with no respect to the amount of use or roadway wear that the vehicles produce.

Thank you for your time.

I think the tax is a good idea for new cars, but older ones should not be taxed this way. Don't you know, the main reason for taxes isn't revenue but social engineering. (Raised in Seattle, living in Virginia=yuck)

they will vote down a tax, so if we make it a fee, we can charge more for it... oh look, an engine displacement fee... oh, look a weight fee on a car... oh look a fee for....
I guess I just have an issue with people being deceiving..

Guess that is what the gov does best...

How do we pay for services and maintenance without taxes? The money has to come from somewhere...

I'm out of energy for the politics of this kind of thing. I do know one thing... I blame industries and overdevelopment for more of the global warming problems than I do automobiles. Therefore... I'll hardheadedly pay whatever tax they want to throw at me for my diesels and V8s... I don't want us to run out of oil, I'll drive in the most efficient manner I can with these vehicles... but I'm not letting them make the vehicles themselves the villains either. That's just no way to solve problems.

I'll gladly pay my taxes when I won't see it wasted by those who tax me. The only reason they keep coming up with new taxes is because they waste the money they get from the old taxes. There is just too much incompetence and money wasting in government. They figure the only way to fix things is with more taxes. It's just more good money going into a failing system.

And Amen to that! I lived in Washington because I could not sell my house at the time and worked in Portland because that's where the job was!
