What--the earlier ones didn't have the right wiring or something? I didn't know, thanks for setting me straight. My '85 is "later," of course.

The earlier models used a smaller domelight than the size of the later models.

Will do, that'd be neat to have a map light version.

Fixing/replacing my drivers seat is my next objective for the interior of the car....but so far I've not seen any in the right color.

What color do you need for your driver's seat?

Hey running-snail,

BTW - That AL49X alternator DID fit in my car with a little coaching. I had to do three things:

1. The holes were slightly smaller in the BMW alternator than mine. Since the housing is aluminum, I just drilled them out with a steel bit and they worked fine.

2. The pulley was a dual V-belt, but smaller width belts than my Benz. I needed to swap the pulleys and remove a spacer. I just took it to Auto-zone and asked nicely, and they swapped the pulleys for me for free. Also, the belts didn't line up *exactly* but they are close enough that no belts are rubbing, etc. Seems to be fine so far, belt may wear a little faster than normal.

3. Goes without saying, wiring harness was different. no big deal though.

Overall, this is very doable, but if you can find the AL129X then it sounds like no fuss, no muss and more amps. Cant beat the fifteen bucks or whatever the yard charges for an old alt.

My #1 junkyard find though: Manual sunroof parts!!

Yeah, I'll probably just repair my existing seat with those "MB noodles" or something....I'll have to take it out/apart to see whats actually broken. The motors/cables need work too. It goes back/forward and reclines but the "lift" function doesn't work...motor just spins. The switch needs replacing as well.

Might just be a cable, might be able to scavenge one from the car Mike found.
