removing 602 head

ok what special tool is needed to remove the head.. or is it some triple square bit I can buy at autozoo?

reason being is.. aluminum is going for a good deal... and the head on the ole pos 602 james bought is just sitting there. I figure we can remove it and get some more money for his delorean fund other than just equating the 50lbs ish into scra metal value of steel.

we removed the valve cover since I wanted it and took note of the 20 or so head bolts.the chain is already off since we did that with a ford wrench

This is the one I used

http://www.bloomertool.com/XZNbits.html Made in Germany

Elora 3230-XZNL

M10x140

If you don't want to have to remove the camshaft, I would by the 140mm

They shipped it to me really fast. I used it on my om601
I also think you could get it at a parts store too. Just make sure it is a size M10 not M8. I made that mistake. A 8mm allen fit onto the bolt, so I thought a 8mm xzn bit would work. It didn't

try an import auto parts store

I found one at an auto parts store that specializes in imports. BMW's may use something similar also.

Tell 'em it looks like a Torx. The biggest difference between Torx and the other 12-point is that Torx is a registered trademark, same with Phillips, we ordered millions of "cross-recess" and "triple-square"/12-point screws at a large cost savings over Torx and Phillips.

Advance, Ace, NAPA, Autozone, Home Depot, Lowes, Bumper to Bumper...I've called them all. I even called the machine shop in Winter Haven, Stamey, that carries Lisle parts.

Then I found this: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1208194

I called NAPA back, talked to someone else and got the same answer...then I gave him the part number...guess what they have in stock! Now he has to try and find it (says he has no idea where it's at). I'll pick it up on the way home hopefully and get started on pulling the head.

Anyone have an idea what the pattern is to remove the bolts? I know it's a circular pattern, starting in the middle on my SBC heads, but this is a totally different head.

*EDIT* just got the call...$6.60 and I'll pick it up at 5:30.

damn... I was going to buy it

looks like you're in the biz of pulling 60x series heads now bro... Don't tell the wife I gave you the idea

Isn't the internets so useful

You're going to have to remove the cam to do so since the tool will not be long enough.. and might need an engine hoist to lift it out.. or a 2x4, some chains, and two people to lift it out. Don't scratch the paint ^_^

Heck, it can't be that heavy. If I can hold the 5-speed on my chest I think I can lift the head. I'll bet it doesn't weigh much more than my LT1 heads.

I think I'll move my aluminum storage out to the shed. I've got a 20" wheel with a "slight bend" to take with me on Saturday too.
