On a 1983 126.... If steering wheel doesnt lock all is fine , key always turns easily. But if wheel locks , let the games begin. Is this and ign /key cylinder problem or is it possible the locking mechiniism is shot??

my 83 126 acts up once in a while. Sometimes it takes a few seconds of wiggling the wheel while turning the key to get it to turn, I figure it's just worn parts but it has never left me stranded so I have not taken the time to tear into it.

All cars do that, its the wheel lock putting pressure on the tumbler. Simply lift the wheel a bit and it will turn fine.

If the tumbler is worn and you have to wiggle the key to get it to turn you should replace it before it fails. If it fails the job is 10 times larger and harder.

Ignition Switch on a w123

I have a similar problem on an 85 300d w123. Once every ten times the key won't turn. I tried taking out the tumbler and cleaning it, wiggling the steering wheel etc. etc. I finally found the trick.. If i push the car forward an inch or so, the key will easily turn.

Does that sound like an ignition switch? I want to fix it before I end up in the spot where it turns into a $1000 job. I don't mind doing the work myself, but wasn't sure if I was chasing the right ghost.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

Understand how the locking pawl works.

It engages a slot in the steering column when you turn the keyswitch to the 0 position. If someone turns the wheel slightly........after the keyswitch is turned........the locking pawl will be loaded.

You can't turn the keyswitch from the 0 position with pressure on the locking pawl. So, you need to apply a slight bit of turning force to the wheel to unload the pawl........the direction is uncertain........the wrong direction further loads the pawl.

Your act of moving the vehicle allows the front wheels to rotate ever so slightly and unload the pawl without the need for you to turn the wheel. The next time you roll it forward..........carefully watch the wheel. it will turn about 1/2" or so. That unloads the pawl and allows you to turn the keyswitch. But, it's much easier to do it by putting a bit of torque into the steering wheel.
