A couple more things...
Doing the engine mounts/shocks is not very hard. Do a search on the subject and you willget step-by-step instructions. It really only takes a good floor jack, a piece of wood (to put between the jack and the oil pan) and the right wrenches to tdo it. Figure on spending about 1.5 to 2 hours doing the first set. I would replace the mounts and shocks at the same time. having somebody to help manipulate the engine onto the new mounts helps, but I did it myself with a long 2x4...

One of the two, or both, get my vote. There is about an inch clearance between the air filter housing and the half firewall on mine.

LUVMBDIESELS - thanks for the info, i look forward to getting together with you! my home is very near Salem (5min from the Salem Civic Center area).
the air cleaner doesn't currently rattle around when the car's idling / running but I'll check the mounts and what holes it's mounted to. I had the air cleaner off when I adjusted the valves but I'm sure I just reinstalled it the same way I'd taken it off. what about this busted mount plate? and do you think i should spring for the full shock mount kits in addition to the shocks?
