Trans swap from '82 TD into '80 n/a TD?

My mechanic informs me that I might need to swap out my transmission on my 1980 300TD n/a wagon. I can buy a wrecked parts car that is a 1982 300TD turbo diesel. Are the transmissions fully compatible between these 2 years and engines?
