I remember all kinds of dire predictions when gas jumped to about $0.50/gallon in the mid-70s, my dad was all bent out of shape. Then we had that little "shortage" and people were glad to buy it at almost any price.

heck I remember 0.29 a gallon for regular gas in the late 60's does that make me a Yuppie? anyhow, I paid $4 a gal last week for diesel at my discount place in Redwood City
I'm sure it is headed North of that with $108 a barrel oil. OPEC is dealing the cards and Wall Street speculators are making it go up also.

When I was a kid I thought the octane rating represented the price. Usually it was pretty close to it.

Its amazing to drive around and see how many evictions there have been. My neighborhood doesn't have any. (all old retired people) but there's a lot of empty houses (even new houses) in the developments and such. Its worse over in Lansing MI (capital) where there seems to be 2-3 eviction homes for every 30. Scary. On top of that, there's usually several for sale that are empty too.

I met 2 couples in my apartment complex. One of the husbands is actually the maintainence guy. They moved down from Flynt after their houses were forclosed. Both couples are around 30 years old and facing bankruptcy. Lynn told me she couldn't even get a job at McDonalds. So many empty houses that they're being stripped of aluminum siding, copper wire & pipes. They're not gonna be worth crap even at forclosure sales if you have to rewire, plum and side the entire house. Not to mention sheetrock, windows, doors, etc.

After spending $58 for 15 gallons last night - $3.89gal, I'm becoming the right lane bandit. I will not be exceeding 65 mph to and from work to milk every mile per tank. Scary times ahead people. My sister is in banking and the prediction is: 2009 to 2014 may resemble 1929.

The weird thing is how regular gas stays right around $3 ($3.05 here) and diesel keeps going up (now at $3.99 this morning). I am surprised the truckers haven't been screaming yet about it.

I've Noticed the same trend... Boston Globe had an article about a week or two ago stating that gas sales in the Northeast were down... I've also noticed that after reducing my highway top speed to 70, cruising at 68 - 69mph, all of a sudden, I'm not being passed by the usual suspects blasting down the highway as fast as they can go... Still get a few, kids mostly diving on daddy's dollar etc. but for the most part, traffic has slowed down to the 65 mph range where it used to be moving around 80 mph.. Makes spotting cruisers easier, but I wonder how Law Enforcement is going to react to lower speeding ticket revenue.....
