79 300CD No Start - need advise please
Hey Guys, I searched and couldn't find what I need so pardon this post if it's redundant.
So we've got this 300 cd that won't start for anything, it ran last year, and with winter got a bit cranky so we did a bit of work on her. Things we've done so far: -Upgrade glow plugs, harness and control unit to newer "pencil" style plugs and test (they come on when the light does) another tidbit, car came with wire loop style glow plugs. -Replace primer pump -Replace fuel lines and filters near pump, air filter -Prime system with mity vac to get air out, it seems to have no problem pulling fuel from the tank -Crack injector lines while cranking -try adding low psi electric pump before injection pump -we are sure we have a strong, high cca battery in fully charged state -we moved the main battery ground wire to a stud on the block, on the engine mount, at this point the secondary ground on the body melted the wire sheath, as in the body - battery ground got very hot. -plug in coolant heater, so that the engine is warm when attempting to start Some Observations: -Injectors lines do not spit very hard when cracked, I'm used to vw's and they make a big mess, -Cranking speed doesn't seem very fast (but I'm also used to small 4 cylinders) -engine sounds like it could fire a couple times during cranking -we've run the battery dead cranking a couple times -it's initial starting problem happened when it was parked on a hill with the tank sort of low on fuel -nothing we've done has changed the way it "doesn't start" Questions: *Are there other obvious things I'm missing? *where should the battery ground go on these cars? *wtf is up with the secondary ground frying like that? *could someone post a sound clip of one cranking at normal speed? Thanks for any and all advice you guys might have for me. Last edited by myke_w; 03-17-2008 at 10:52 AM. |
