Has anybody put the AL129X alt on a 603?

I want to swap the AL129X alternator I put in my 1981 300SD to the 'new' 1986 SDL I just bought. The question I have for you OM603 gurus out there is this. Has anybody put the Bosch AL129X 115 amp alternator on a 300SDL?

I know that the pulley and mount have to be swapped, but I need to know if the new alternator will fit in the OM603 mount and work with the serpentine belt setup.

Also I am assuming that the 70amp AL65X in the SDL will fit in the mount for the OM617 on the SD. Am I right in thinking this?

Thanks!!

Can't be done. The shafts and pulleys are totally different between the two. The AL129x alternator will ONLY work for V-belt engines like the 617 and 117. The good news is that you can easily swap a late MB/OEM 110-150A alternator on to your 603 for cheap. I've done this on several of my 60x engines (and my M119). Details are here:

Installed a 143A alternator in my W124 (86-95 E-class) - with photos

Skip to page 2, post #21, for details on why the AL129x will not work (and why you can't put the late alternator on an old V-belt engine).
