cylinder head bolt tension

can anybody help me on the torque when I tighten my cylinder head bolt. My engine is a 617 on a 300d 123 body.

What is the recommended torque for tightening?

What is the recommended BTDC for an 170,000 km old engine?

79 model automatic 300d
79 model manual 300d

I dont remember the exact spics but it evolved a couple steps. You really should have at least the Haynes manual or the CD. The timing is 24 degrees BTDC. There is a mark there on the balancer.

Rod, you need both the sequnece and the torque spec. I dont have them for your engine. Someone will. Torque sequence is key.

thanks for the btdc stevo.. i now i just have to tighten the bolts... hope it fires up.. it has been blowing white smoke before I removed the cylinder head.. I tought there was a problem with the piston or the rings.. lucky that they are ok.. know that I have to put them back.. WINGAS do you use WVO? I am thinking of using it.. just have to study how to convert my engine..

Rod
I'm not trying to be a smart ass here, but are you doing all this without a manual of any kind? I'm really not a "long time" crusty old mechanic (just old) but I know some people have a natural "knack" to be able to just take things apart and fix em, but an MB engine?

stevo, i had experience with other types of diesel ang gas engine but I dont have a service manual for 300d that is why I am asking if somebody knows about the torque. The rest is almost the same as any engine, just have to be careful with proper torque specially with the head..
But thanks for the concern.. i know how risky it is that is why I am asking somebody like you who has experience .. I am new at ine engine of an MB.. hope that you guys support me..
Thanks

Which head bolt type?

Many thanks to the community here!

I'm going to replace my timing chain on my 1982 Mercedes 300SD (126) this coming weekend. Since I'm going to have the valve cover off, I thought it would be a good thing to retorque the head bolts.

Thanks for the tightening sequence - but now I'm confused which head bolts I have!

I see two type of bolts listed on the tightening sequence
  1. Hex Socket head bolts (cylinder head bolts with cylindrical shank)
  2. Double Hex socket cylinder head bolts (necked down cylinder head bolts)
I believe my engine's a 617.951 - both bolt types call for different torque procedures. Which one do I use?

Best regards,

James F. Smith

Jim, dotn know, but this'll bump it.

I'm just trying to find the correct socket size for my 606 head bolts.
