W124 300D alarm wiring question
I am still working through the problems left in my 1987 W124 300D (mfg date July 1986) by the PO, who butchered the wiring to install an aftermarket alarm. In particular, the door switch wiring was boogered, so I still have two non-working puddle lamps (Mercedes calls them "exit lamps"), the left front and the right rear.
Today I pulled off the right rear door skin and the B-pillar trim so I could look at the switch, the puddle lamp, and its wiring. The problem turned out to be that the wires to the puddle lamp (Red/Yellow and Brown/Gray) had been cut and the cut ends jammed into the rubber pass-through so they were invisible. I repaired the wires but now the puddle lamp is ON dimly all of the time as if it isn't getting full voltage (2 lamps in series somewhere?). I suspect that the PO changed the arrangement of wires in the B-pillar -- there are about 5 different brown/gray wires going down the B pillar to the floor wiring. The FSM wiring diagram (CD-ROM version, page 128 "Courtesy Lamps and Trunk Lamp") does not show the rear door switches, only the lamps, with an arrow "E" pointing to "X42" which is a connector in the front passenger footwell. The rear door switches, which are S17/5 and S17/6 according to the parts list, are not shown, so I don't know how they are supposed to be wired. I suspect that the rear door switches are shown in the factory alarm wiring, which my manual does not describe. Does anyone have wiring diagrams for the factory alarm for this car or for something similar? Jeremy
