what's the easiest way to remove axles '83 SD?

looks like the diff needs to be lowered and rear panel has to come off? are the locked like in the 123? is it easier with the car on it's wheels?

Block up the car with the wheels hanging. Remove wheel/tire. I've been able to work them out without any further disassembly. Other than releasing the ends, of course.
