I cut the EGR pipe in half (dremel with diamond cutting wheel), and on the exhaust side, flattened it in a bench vise and folded the flattened end over several times, like a toothpaste tube.

On the intake side, I first washed that half to get all the metal dust out from cutting it. I then attached a small filter from Autozone. It was only about $14 and looks to be surprisingly well constructed. I connected it to the intake half of the EGR pipe using a short section of 1 1/4" clear vinyl tubing from the hardware store, and two hose clamps.

The vinyl tubing has a VERY thick wall and is quite stiff. It fit snugly over the steel egr pipe and also over the filter without the clamps, but due to engine vibration, the clamps are necessary. I don't know how well the vinyl will hold up to the heat, but I'll keep an eye on it. Some 1 1/4" coolant hose is probably a better choice.

Here it is:

I'm very interested in this. No CEL codes set? The mod you did is certainly not reversible, but I'd love to get my NA 606 breathing better.

For a '97, this is the only way to bypass the EGR and have no CEL. All the other methods will cause a CEL. Do a forum search for 606 egr and there are several threads that discuss this if you want more info. Pretty simple really though, just like it looks in the photo.

This is indeed easily reversible. Simply order a replacement egr pipe from the dealership. It's just a steel tube, can't cost more than a couple of bucks. It's all bolt-on stuff, you could swap it out in under 10 minutes.

I might do this mod too. Anyone have a part # for the filter that is tapped in? Thanks Jim

The filter is $14.99 at Autozone in the PCV breather aisle.

I got the CEL on my '97 too when I tried the easy fix. Will probably do this, but want to hear how things are going for those that have done it. Lupin and others, any change in performance, mileage, etc? The one potential drawback might be higher engine temperatures, because the exhaust gas lowers combustion temps to lower nox. Will be curious how things go for those that are doing it.

A MUST for '95 E300's!!!!!!

I've had this bookmarked for over a year, and finally performed this modification.
All I can say is that it doesn't even feel like the same car!!!
I love my '95. By far it is my most favorite MB that I have ever owned. But it was a bit annoying for a couple of reasons.
First, when slowly accelerating, there was a tremendous loss of momentum on the 1st to 2nd shift. The car would fall completely on its nose. Rapid acceleration was fine.
Second, these cars are far from quick. You are constantly having to downshift in order to accelerate the car from the lower rpms of a particular gear. {for example, going 40mph in 4th required a downshift to 3rd to gain mph}.
With this mod performed, First the car accelerates smoothly from 1st to 2nd without falling on its nose. I can't begin to tell you what a huge difference this is!! This is the single biggest complaint I had with the car. The difference is amazing.
Second, in a limited test drive, I can tell that the car can accelerate from 40mph without having the jerk of a downshift.
The car is a much more enjoyable drive now!!
If you look at the flap in the intake just downstream of the air filter box, you can tell that when you are mildly accelerating and the accelerator cable is not opened up halfway or better, the flap to the airbox must be blocking air from the airfilter box and must be pulling mostly through the egr. Restricted air, less fuel I'm guessing, and no acceleration.
Now I'm curious to see what this will do to my mpg. Usually when you rob Peter you have to pay Paul, so we'll see, but the difference in how the car drives will be worth it.
Here are just some quick pics:

This is the linkage from the accelerator cable to the flapper valve that is removed.

I'm happy about this because several times a year I have to clean and lube this piece to allow the accelerator linkage to fully retract and allow rpm's to drop to normal idle.

Then here are the two lines that get the BB's. Since I have mush in my brain pan, I marked the lines with the BB's.

And finally, I tie-wrapped the flapper valve open. Not much resistance on this valve at all, so a tie wrap was fine.

This is quick to do, quick to undo and the difference makes it inexcusable for a '95 E300 owner not to perform this.
I'm just sayin'........

Kudos to Karl for starting this thread and for the info!

since i just purchased a 95 E300d, i am wanting to do the EGR disabling mod. JimmyL i have a question regarding the pictures you showed above. i see the first line that needs to be plugged, but the second line is not so obvious. am i plugging the actual EGR device vacuum line as well? in the second picture you are pointing at a vacuum line, but i am not sure if you mean the vacuum line that is near it.

Just made this modification and I'll agree...it's amazingly simple to accomplish. I noticed better shifting without question...specifically the shift points and it just accelerated better. I'll see how it performs long term. Has anyone put a K&N instead of the standard air box?

Here it is:
... explain what the breather and filter are for on the egr pipe?
I'd just block off the exhaust... why put a filter on there and leave it open?

I will never put another K&N filter on any of my cars, nor will i help friends with their cars if they have K&N filters. Say what you will, but the original air box will work just fine by giving my diesel engine all the clean air it needs. I don't want to risk trying to save a few bucks on air filters and at the same time killing my engine with dirty air.

Please just forget the idea.

Seems like there is a solenoid looking thing down there, and it is BB's in that small diameter line with the yellow joining piece. Put BB in the smaller diameter hose.
Great mod, and SO SIMPLE.
Racekar done good.....

I'm happy to retract my question in this particular thread, but I'll say that my intent wasn't to get folk to "bite" on this. It was a simple question, based on my lack of any experience, that was meant to enhance my understanding. That's all. There's no need for that sort of response towards me.

Thanks, anyway, for posting the pics on the mod...it certainly helped me improve the performance of my car.

Andy
