Arrow W123 Oil cooler hose blew!

At least my 300D was in the driveway idling! My replacement is a Conti, Made in Germany, but either my current hoses are really stiff and hard or this one just seems really soft. Has anyone used these before and are you satisfied with them?

My car was idling in the driveway when I noticed oil dribbling out from under the drivers side right in fron of the wheel! Oh, crap! Well, it could have been worse, I could have been going down the freeway! Thing is, my hose didn't look bad but it just started leaking.

I guess looks aren't everything!

Was that hose in contact with anything where it wore out?

If so then what ye need in nautical term is "chafing gear" - wraps over lines to prevent em from wearing out:

In similar fashion if yer hoses rub against *anything* including another hose then they'll wear and eventually spring leaks. Even plastic vacuum line can eat fuel or oil hoses if it comes in contact.

Visual inspection aint enough, gotta reach into engine bay to find suspicious lookin vibration spots. Betcha find a few points where hoses wearin thin from loose contact with something else. My personal fave material for wrapping chafing gear is an old bicycle tube secured with fine wire or string. Though even torn strip of towel rag will help.

Probly one mfgr of oil hose is good as another says me. Question is what do hoses rest against.

These hoses didn't rub anything! Once I got it out and looked at it, it lokked brittle, so I cut it open and it literally disintegrated right in my hands!

It was right at the lower part where the hose goes into the lower part of the cooler too. Nothing to rub up against. Looks like it just wore out!

Welcome to the club. Seriously, we should start a fraternity of drivers that were lucky enough to survive this ordeal.

At least you weren't on the highway like me. I caught it very quickly, but you can see the mess.

Well if your hoses are like mine were. a couple years ago I had the same sort of problem. I had noticed for quite a while the lower hose where it is crimped on was wet, but not dripping. it always stayed the same. I always thought the rubber was sure hard stuff the germans use.

We were on a trip coming home across Hwy40, think we went to Dallas, Tx. we stopped just into calif., I was checking under the hood, and the damn hose was dripping ( Just a little) so kept a eye on it all the way back to Santa Cruz. when we got home the inside of the L/F wheel was wet with oil.

The reason for the hard rubber is they had been on there since new. had a stamp in the crimp of 10/84. amazing how soft the new rubber is.

So these are not for the life of the car, they need to be changed out like all the other deteriorating rubber parts on the car.

So I don`t know what is worse, blow a oil hose, or have a timing chain break?

Good thing you saw it in your driveway. was there any dates on the hose?

Charlie ☺

No dates that I could find, but it was the funniest thing. I started my car and realised I forgot something and left it running when I went back inside.

When I came out, there was a little puddle under the front left and it was getting bigger. Then, a steady pouring of oil in a thin stream, so I popped the bonnet and there it was!

So since I just had to replace my climate control after it decided to eject all the buttons and inner parts and springs, well it might as well need this now too!

It never ends sometimes. fix one end and the other end falls apart.
seem like my L/R axle might be grumbling, just a theory now.

replaced the electric sun roof with manual as per the DIY write up, and can`t get the back end to lock in just right. I guess this is a self inflicted problem.

Went to PNP yesterday, and the clutch peddle went to the floor in front of PNP, and Iam 20 mi from home. slave cylinder went out, a trail of oil leading up to where I parked. when I left, started in gear and got her shifted through the gears and home. guess the old Datsun is getting tird.

Why did you replace the electric with a manual? Hopefully this will be it for awhile. Many other things were already taken care of. This really makes me appreciate the 240D. The Previous Owner wanted to give it to his daughter for a graduation present.

After spending months on a transmission overhaul along with new flex joints in the driveshaft, trans mount, new AC pump, new axles, new braking system all the way round, and various other things, he found out she didn't appreciate any of it! Good for me since he spent close to $7000 in parts and provided his own labour!

Low oil pressure alarm

Another piece of evidence showing why a low oil pressure alarm is worth adding! See this thread here

I just recently replaced my oil cooler lines also. When I removed the old lines, one of them broke at the rubber portion because it was so hard and brittle. The new hoses weren't soft rubber, but MUCH softer than the rubber on the old ones.

Once I saw the condition of the new hoses I understood why the old ones were leaking.

What brand did you replace yours with? Mine are the Conti, which I thought might have looked a little soft in the rubber portion, but they were made in Germany, not China! Someone mentioned Braided steel lines, but not where to get them. Anyone know this?

My dad's car needs them replaced too, we're going to order the dealer lines today out of paranoia of so many people having them fail!

His are seeping at the crimps....so it is time. I replaced mine a few years ago with OEM and they've been leak free since. And I don't have to worry about them now.

I have the same as yours.

PM Omegabenz, he replaced the rubber portions of his hoses with the braided lines and updated fittings.
