1976 300d

I have a 1976 300 D which will no longer pass inspection cause of the rust. The engine in it is a new factory engine with about 12,000 miles on it which was purchased a few years back from Germany at a cost of about $8,000. I been looking for another of the same kind of car and I was wandering if that engine the 5 cyl would fit any other car and what models? I appreciate any help. Thanks!

You have a W115 model car and the engine in it is virtually identical to that used in the later W123, with the exception of the oil filter housing I believe. You can either keep looking for another W115 chassis to drop yours into or find a W123 and transplant the oil filter housing from it to your engine and transplant it. Others might chime in on any other known differences, but as far as I know that is the only major issue.

I just got done with a transplant of a 115 300D into a 77 123 300D
It was mostly a drop in. BUT the devil is in the details !!

Power steering pump and fuel filter bracket location completely different, swap from OE 123 motor. Because of oil filter location the oil cooler lines needed to be custom made. Not a big problem, just got some high pressure hoses from NAPA. Line to oil pressure gauge now to short...was a PETA to find the right fitting to splice them. The AC compressor bracket is different because of a slightly different water pump swap from OE 123 motor. Intake + ex manifold is completely different. Swap from OE123.
The biggest PETA was the accelerator linkages. Don't know how to describe it exactly... but all I can say is one pushes on the injector pump lever and the other pulls it. So I had to custom make a cable setup from the bracket under the ex manifold all the way across the valve cover to the lever that goes down to the IP That has a PAIN !

It's a GREAT running motor and it was all worth the effort
PM me if I can be of any help
Bruce
