With the identity theft nowadays, I'll be grinding off half of that # but it will take at least a day to do most of them.
The police say to put your Drivers lisc. on the tools as they can referance that back to an owner. For instance if the raided a hous several years later and found tools with a drivers Lisc. To go along with that you also need to have filed a police report of the theft.

After several thefts in my house over the course of 4 years (I was single at the time no one home during the day). The Police said to get a dog. They are a good deterent as they make a lot of noise; otherwise there is just about 0 chance anyone will notice.
I did not want a dog so I put bars on my windows and bought an old style wire type alarm system from Radio Shack (thats my dog to make noise). I most of and my best tools inside of the house in a large closet in the middle of my house. I has a regular door that I reinforced with iron strap metal and the hinges are such that they cannot be pried off with out tearing the wall apart. It has a Dead Bolt Lock and A security type Pad lock and the part that serves as the hasp is welded to metal frames. It is also hooked up to the alarm system.
In past thefts when the Police came to my house the first thing that they ask was "who was here last" indicating that most often thefts are done or the information relayed by someone who knows you.
I think we all no someone who while working on some project who has a garage that faces the street and leaves that garage door wide open for any one to see all of their goodies inside.
Since I put up the bars no one has tried to get in. Before that time I would sometimes come home and find someone had taken off or pried on my screens attempting to get in and for whatever reason they changed their minds.

I keep my tools locked up in my workshop whjich is a half mile from the road. A couple of good watch dogs and a sign at the gate on the road that says "we don't call 911" with a 45 hole through it.

geezzzz i sure wish i hadnt posted this one

got me so nervous i will probably hide them in my better half's dresser or in the crawlspace or in the septic tank in a big fish net. of course if i do that repair procedures might be a wee bit longer...of course in Boston i ran across a guy with a yard full of benz's who left tons of tools in his open barn. i said dont you lock them up? & he replied with a wink, "Who would want those -----things"

Keeping that in mind, maybe the ultimate protection would be to buy a bunch of shiny computer cases with nothing but scrap metal in them or a bunch of false jewelry and gold and leave it on your workbench..or else buy all those burned out lcd monitors and leave them lying around...or else leave a bunch of phoney credit cards lying around..

Food for thought

Kew don't wanna be messin round inna my garage...

Have four dogs...smallest un is to wake the next smallest one (#2 will chew you a new ankle), which will wake no 3 dog- that one will hold you fer sure, then no 4 will come over and try to swaller you whole...prolly could too.

Garage looks like an explosion went off in it. Good luck on them gettin anything out. It is alarmed, but in addition to house alarm. Tools marked with identifying marks (no ss# or DL#--identity theft you know). Several surprises in there too. Did I tell ya my best friend was an explosives X-pert in Nam. Be careful what you step on in my garage(we-uns have decided to call it a flash-bang device fer alarm purposes). Then, member, this is TEXAS and we have the right to carry firearms. Lots of TEXANS do so , and sides that, bunches of TEXANS KNOW how to use said firearms. Fact, from sun-down to sun-up here in Texas, it is legal to use deadly force if someone starts messin with your property.

Had some family members under death threat at one time, and it is on record. So we kinda learned from pros how to set some stuff up.

Be safe out there.

Regards

Run-Em

Thats a BFD!

Add it to your home/renters insurance, photograph what you have and engrave your name/initials on everything.

Several tool companies sell wireless alarm systems designed for toolboxes.

How about this? wrenches conduct electricity.. metal snap on boxes conduct electricity.. And in a workshop you must have 120v avalible. Ive been thinking of doing this for a very long time, and if i ever get robbed, the next retard to touch my tools will get a nice blackened hand from the arc that my box will give off. i would wire three phase into my garage just so i can kill them instantly.

usually it ends up being you who gets zapped by forgetting to disconnect the wires. Be very careful about doing an electric trap. Lots of courts will not see it as your legal right to do so. On the other side, there's all the tools you want in prison. Made of paper?

My guess is a ryder on your house policy might be reasonable. If there is anything reasonable left out there. Most home owners policies have some clause for 1500 dollars on hobby items included.
I guess if your tools where stold you might collect up to that amount. On the otherhand the slimey insurance companies would probably find an out. You fellows are right to be concerned the drug culture out there probably find tools very easy to resell. There seems to be more activity in that culture all the time.

We just keep everything in the house (in the basement, with the lathe and all the other stuff), they'll have to break into that first. They'll find the five dogs once they come in the front door, all five of them will probably help them load the truck. Hopefully we'll hear the commotion.
