w126 climate control- is defogger supposed to do this?
(Currently there is no AC charge on my car so AC is inop)
I've just started really driving it and these things are still pretty new to me. Fan control works fine and temp control works well (albeit no AC) so I'm assuming the mixing valve is ok too. All the vent/floor/dash controls work well after I replaced 1 vacuum actuator. When it is in the front defog setting, the diverter shifts the blower to the front windshield and locks the blower on high speed. That seems good. It also locks the temperature at max. That does not seem good. Is it supposed to do it? I was driving it in the rain today and that was the only way I could keep the windows from fogging (again, no AC) but it got really hot and I would keep having to cycle between sauna and foggy windows while driving.

It sets heat to max and engages the AC compressor. Heat wins with the AC compressor engaged so it'll win even bigger without a freon charge.

I agree!! That is exactly what it is supposed to do. In the mean time you could press the button next to the Defroster button and it will blow air out defrost, footwells, side vents and a little out the center vents. You can control the fan speed here and you can also put the temp all the way to cool and you will just get outside air into the car with whatever temp the outside air is.
The button has an arrow up and down on it. It is just to the right of the defrost button. John
