Drilling w123 trunk lock

I need to drill the trunk lock of my 84 300d, and am looking for suggestions for the best way to do it. TX76513 posted a while ago to "Take a 3/8 carbide drill and finish drilling the rest of cylinder out. Angle your drill hitting the bit at 2 o'clock and shaft angled to 7 o'clock." After you have drilled the hole, what is the next step? Should the trunk pop open or do you need to stick a screwdriver in to get it open?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Why do you need to drill it? Vacuum unlock not working?

The problem, I think, is something mechanical within the lock. The car has the emergency release cable under the back seat, which bypasses the vacuum lock, but with it pulled the trunk will not release. I have also gone in through the first aid kit, per funola's directions, and that has not worked. I have tried every option short of drilling that I have come across, and none have worked. So now I just want to get in the trunk damaging as few things as possible, hopefully just the already broken lock.

you can just knock on the side (to the right) of the license plate with a big 4x4 length of wood and have some one pull up at the same time and it will pop open

I tried the 4x4 method, and it did not work. I removed the license plate and hit below the lock mechanism, but the trunk would not budge. I stopped after a dent started to form.

did you have some one pulling up at the same time? no need to hit it that hard.. just a good solid thud to the left or right of it.

If you do decide to do the drill method, the lever to push on is at the 2 o'clock position. After you get it drilled out, keep the pins for the replacement lock.

drilling it out

So i did this on my 81 240 manual. I just drilled it until everything started falling out in pieces. after you get the locking mechanisim out there is a lever towards the back that you can push with a screwdriver and it will pop open...i never tried getting a replacement lock....but i am sure that you could buy another one from mercedes. it would just have a different key. I never had a problem with someone trying to steal stuff out of the back...infact it probably is more secure that way. the only way to get it open is with a screw driver and knowing how stupid criminals are...they probably couldn't figure it out.

I guess that you do not have the key for the lock and that is why you want to drill it.

hey there TheDon.......remember me?? i recently began working on my coupe, after getting a 240 D and restoring it to mechanical perfection.....

so i dont know if u remember, but i could not get into my trunk at all.......someone messed the lock up for me.....so today, i decided, its been 5 years, im not getting it open, im gonna drill it.....

so i went on here, saw this thread, saw your post about putting a 4x4 on there and smacking it with the hammer.......IT WORKED ON THE FIRST TRY !!!!!

that info didnt used to be available, the last time years ago i was on any forums.....where'd you hear about this trick??

oh, and it turns out my injection pump was clogged with gook......i took it off last week, opened her up, its full of crap.......im glad i didnt let anyone talk me into a new pump like 4 years back.....everyone said it was done, but it obviously wasnt.....

what happenned to the OBK and Schuman's ???

ill be on here from now on......see u around...

Learned about it in a junk yard.

I had no idea the 85's had a manual trunk release.

Last I saw you is we dropped you off at the airport to head back to Deutschland.

manual trunk release ?? im not following you...

i did pop the back seat off real quick to see if the infamous cable release was there, but no, it wasnt.....

the problem had been that the latch was sticking shut a little bit, and my old worn out lock that already was funny sometimes got a screwdriver stuck in there and banged on with a hammer, im sure of it, thats what it looks like....

so i think its just awesome that that trick worked on the first try.......also a little scary, since anyone that hears about this can steal anything i have in there....

It has been mentioned that Models that have the Factory Security/Alarm System have a Pull Cable to unlock the Trunk under the Rear passanger side of the Seat.
For some reason the cable does not show up on the regular parts sites.

The car came with an old non-functioning alarm, which I removed....looked like an aftermarket POS to me.
