That looks a might familiar. I recall thinking when I was taking the spring compressor off the front of my 123 that the spring just kept getting taller and taller. My wife asked why I was laughing, alone in the garage.

Don't ask how I came back to this long dead thread, but I felt it necessary to respond for an archival obligation.

I did know this...ahem...gentleman for a few months. He did ride in my car once or twice. At that time the front was at it's lowest (as noted I raised it back up a bit), and with his "excessive girth" in the passenger seat and a fairly spirited turn there was a hint of rub. That along with the fairly substandard spring rate (also mentioned) I decided to go for a less extreme drop.

I will also state that he is the type of guy that will spout off random facts (or proclaimed to be) with little instigation. Borderline Rain Man if you can imagine. I believe his actions on this forum have indicated a far worse condition than I have pro-claimed here, so I'll leave it at that...

Anyway, the W123 is long sold to a very nice man in WA and I'm sure is living a happy life at the farm playing with all the other MB's.

Take care all, hope I haven't inconvenienced anyone with this resurrection.

Did you sell it with or without the wheels?

This is my chopped spring 300CD based on info I gathered from the threads.

This is with a photo shopped wheels added to my cut job.

Rear:

I cut the rear 1.5 coils. This decreased the roll a whole lot.
I used 1 nub shims to preserve as much spring and cushion as possible.

I used Bilstein HDs, but like the ride of Bilstein Comforts better. I changed the back to Comforts and it is pretty good. If I was to do it over again, I would cut 1.25 because it will still eliminate the gap and conserve spring.

The ride is still good but not as good as stock, but stock has awful roll. At 1.5 coils, there is very little roll. You have to find the best middle ground, which is in my mind 1.25 which would have a nice ride, have no wheel gap and decrease roll tremendously.

Front:

I cut the front 2.0 coils. I have some 205 65 15 edited tires and this is rubbing when simultaneously go up a driveway with the wheels turned.

I had Bilstein HDs on for a few months and the Comforts take the small bumps softer. You do not need HD for handling because the coil cut eliminates the roll.

The theory of front HDs and rear Comforts is bunk. There is not a balanced adjustment to the initial hit and the shocks dampening are not synchronous. I have new comforts on front and rear and it is very good.

You can see in the previous posts, the front 1.5 cuts still leave a visual wheel gap.

And the 2.0 cuts with a 3 nub shim has tire issues. I might solve this when I put on my lower profile wheels. (or I will have to roll my fenders) Stay tuned.

But if I were to do it over, I would cut it 1.75 coils in the front with Bilstein Comforts and three nub shims.

Hope this helps.

Might be an old question but here we go... Got an 81 240d, but it has an 85 300Td conversion with 4spd..
Been reading the threads and looking at doing a lowering via cutting the springs.. But with the engine change would the "amount" to cut be a significant difference due to the heavier engine.. Or am I reading into this to much....

It must be sitting high for you if you’re even talking about it.

One question is whether the spring is clocked at both ends to sit properly in the perches. If it is, you should cut a full turn from the end that isn’t tapered, which might be too much.

What springs are on now?

Have a look at my posts in this thread, be sure to ignore the original poster as he refuses to listen to what others have actually done on other brands of cars.

Going to race springs and jack bolts is the most direct route.

Also, H&R still makes lowering springs for w123 both sedan and s123 Wagon.

Has Anyone Actually Installed H&R Lowering Springs on Their Diesel Whip?

I have a full set on mine and they are a really handling improvement without sacrificing ride comfort.

I lowered my wagon by cutting 1 1/2 coils off the bottom of the springs for the front, and by adjusting the SLS valve for the back. The first photo is when I just got the BBS rims with 225/45R16 tires and standard height. The second photo is with it lowered with 225/50R16 tires. I have 4 nub pads on it, as it was a bit too low with the one nub pads that I put in at first.
