I just saw Diesel was at $4.87 today. I am experiencing a shortage of WVO to blend. My MB is an extra car for me. I was thinking of selling and paying some bills and putting the rest away for my next car.
With the cost of diesel do you think it is a bad time to sell? OR do you think it is a good time with the rising costs of gasoline?

All fuel is expensive. It does not matter what car you own.

Fuel is still cheap, both gasoline and diesel will get significantly more expensive. Just drive whatever you like to drive, regardless of fuel type.

Yup and diesel prices will come down. Dont forget the main diff is tax.

Gasoline is nearly a $1 cheaper per gallon.

Look at it this way. Would you rather pay $2 for fuel, car payment, and inflated car insurance?

or

pay $5 for fuel on a car with no payment, and low insurance while driving something with class and engineering?


I'll deal with the $5 a gallon until the monkey is out of the house...

If its a good time to sell, keep it. You'd probably rather have whatever benefit makes it a good time to sell rather than give that benefit to someone else.

If its a bad time to sell, then park it for 6 months as there's no benefit to having it right now. Reevaluate after 6 months whether to start driving it or sell it then.

If your decision is purely monetarily motivated, then you're probably better off selling the least valuable vehicle -- the one that gets the worst fuel milage and is the least desirable right now.

Gas and diesel prices will probably swap for most costliest every now and then because they both come from the same barrel, but OPEC doesn't see the need to do anything to reduce the price, so prices probably won't be going down much ever again. Consider the economics and local market forces you'll see as a result of that, and you may well want to retain that oil burner alternative you already have rather than dispose of it now and decide you wish you hadn't.

I'd say in three years it will make no difference whether you drive gasoline or diesel in terms of what you pay at the pump. If you like your MB, keep it and enjoy it while you can. I wouldn't make any big decision based on what's happening in the oil market right now. At the risk of being cliched ... you ain't seen nothin' yet. My best guess is both fuels have a lot of rising to do, with gas eventually catching up to diesel.

I can't really put myself in someone else's shoes though ... I have a major sentimental attachment to my car and am admittedly biased toward diesel technology. I'm also fairly fortunate in terms of being able to accommodate high fuel prices at this point in my life. Still, my advice is don't sell the Benz based on economics, unless you're down to your last dollar. Won't do you much good in the long run and you may miss it in a few years.

The cost has to exceed 30% more before it gets cheaper to run gas... It generally is better to run Diesel until then. Has it gotten to that point? Not that I know of.

It's the same thing every year. April rolls around and gas/diesel prices go up - through July/August I get to hear all the stupid price projections and hear all the panic. Then when summer is over, the prices go back down (not as low as they were, but they go down) and everyone shuts up. If you wanted to sell your diesel, I'd wait until the end of the summer when the prices come back down.

... here in Mount Holly, NC RUG is going for 3.949 and D is going for 4.69... not quite 1.00 higher... add in the annual price of spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributer cap, and rotor button... and a gasser sure is pricey to own... the newer ones are even more expensive to maintain. those coil on plugs are NOT cheap, I just read in a magazine about the new ford triton V8 in the new pickup... spark plugs totally different from ANY other vehicle... I am SURE they are going to be very affordable to replace...
naw, I will drive the diesel fuel may cost more in the winter time, but the overall experience of driving a Diesel Oil burner is worth it, and Much more affordable.

Excellent point! As far as this administration goes, they have no control over fuel prices. This should hgave been very apparent when George Bush couldn't get the Saudi's to pump more oil.

Place the blame where it belongs, squarely in the lap of the environmentalist liberals! We haven't been able to build a refinery in this country for more than 30 years. We can't go to ANWR, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota or any sources in the U.S. for ourselves, even though we are the third biggest oil producer in the world. And at the same time no one wants to be in Iraq for much of anything else, let alone oil reserves.

And that doesn't even begin to touch the layers of lawyers hired by idiots like the Sierra club who drag issue after issue into court forcing our oil and gas producers to spend billions before ANY profit is made all because of the possible shortening of the lifespan of the buck tooth bunny. And these same lawyers will drive up in a GMC Yukon or Sierra or Range Rover or Cadillac Escalade thinking they are so green because they can burn ethanol!

These same moron's showed up here in the valley fighting us for 10 years because we wanted to build the Nations first of it's kind and largest Solar Power Plant ever right here in Arizona! Finally we got the go ahead to build it, but before even 1 killowatt was created, it cost millions in legal fees even though it would have made us closer than ever to being energy independent. I'm suprised that SRP got to build the first of it's kind algae based biodiesel plant in Arizona using the heat from the sun and the Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant to make biodiesel!

Bottom line is keep your car as long as it runs well and is roadworthy and if you flatten a liberal with it, most of us will thank you!
