Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40

Has anyone been able to find this oil any other place than a dealer?

It is not available in retail outlets at this time. Its only available from your local dealer.

Only cars/trucks that require that oil spec 229.51 are the new blue-tec (OM642) diesels starting in 2007.

Yes, and I suspect you're doing the intelligent thing, which is to carry a quart or two in case you're out on the road and need to add oil. You won't find it anywhere, as noted.

There's a sticker under the hood of these cars stating to not add any quantity of non 229.51 oil.

I was using this oil for 2007 Sprinter. This van is not blue tec but it has DPF so low ash oil is required. At first I was paying $11.95!/qt at DODGE stealer, then I found it cheap at Mercedes dealer ($5.95/qt)
13 qts at every oil change...

Using a 229.51-compliant oil in the Bluetec makes sense because of the emission equipment. Using it in older diesels is not necessary but it might be an interesting experiment if you're going to do a UOA, but I would not expect superior wear numbers.

VW's old 505.01 oil standard has nothing to do with this discussion.
