Where do you guys find a 14mm allen wrench/socket? The biggest I can find in any kit or single at all the stores I've looked at is 10mm.

I found a 9pc hex socket set from Harbor Freight. They are online too. It was $13.99 for the whole set. It goes from 4mm to 17mm. Fits on the end of a ratchet. 3/8 for the smaller ones 1/2in drive for the larger ones(14mm)

Thanks, just found them.

I have the oil and a pump to get it in there but no 14mm allen wrenches. Looks like a trip to Harbor Freight is in store sometime in the near future.

Autozone is much closer than HF, only a half-mile. I'll check them out. I did look online but couldn't find anything. That is not always indicative of what is in the store.

But I could use a set of good metric allen head sockets. We'll see what I come by first!

Thanks

I got my 14mm allen head socket at auto zone too. I got a pack of 3 for $10 and it contained a 12mm, 14mm, and a 17mm.

does the sound change with load? My friend's '76 needs a diff rebuild but it only makes noise when the diff is backturning.

Unfortunatley it does not change with load. It gets louder at certain speeds. But if I shift into neutral while driving it does not change. It is annoying and is concerning me. But it seems that this car has made this noise for years but has gotten louder or it is me being more paranoid and wanting to fix everything. This forum is AWESOME it is provided me the knowledge and courage to fix things on the car. But now I constantly wanna mess with the car. It is annoying to my wife but fun for me. It's my new hobby!

OK, this sounds like bearings, not gears. diff gears usually make noise based on load. it could still be in the diff, but more than likely, it's a bearing. I would start at the front of the drive shaft and inspect the center bearing for damage, then move back. check the rubber on each end of the shaft for cracks while you are in there. get the rear up on jack stands and put the car in neutral and spin things by hand feeling for vibration and grating... you should be able to isolate where the problem is.

*****DO NOT START THE MOTOR ON JACKSTANDS UNLESS THE CAR IS REALLY REALLY SECURE!!! *****

I mean on solid stands with wheel chocks and several ratchet straps front and back holding EVERYTHING from moving AT ALL!!!
turning things by hand on stands is fine, if you get the urge to start the car... resist it strongly!!!

sounds like she needs one for herself... then you both can have fun working on them!

find the source yet?

I'm having some low whine noise coming from somewhere too.. I can only hear it at low speeds and it doesn't change pitch. It's the same sound when just rolling from a stop with my foot off the brake til there's too much road noise to hear.

Not a belt whine and not from engine (rev in neutral and don't hear it)

I gotta put the car up and spin the wheels to see whats going on. I really don't know what spins or rotates that wouldn't change pitch as you accelerate.

Many years ago...... my neighbor's son decided to investigate a rear end noise by jacking up his van with a hydraulic jack under the diff, starting it and putting it into gear....

As he left the driver's seat, the jack lost pressure....

I wasn't there at the time, but I'm told it was a scene worthy of Keystone Cops as he tried to get back into the the moving vehicle as it proceeded at speed up the street straight into the back of my mother-in-law's car.

Several thousand dollars later.....
