Can I change the belt on my 606 without removing the fan?

I can easily take the fan shroud off but can I get the belt around the tensioner pulley without removing the fan?

95 606 serpentine belt change

I was able to replace the serpentine belt on my 95 E300 non turbo 606 by just loosening the fan shroud. I tucked the belt behind the fan around the tensioner pulley and then outwards to the passenger side around the rest. I say give it a try.

Done! And you won't believe how I did it. Got the old one off without too much trouble, but could not get the new one on. I couldn't get the belt between the crank and waterpump pulleys to put on the tensioner pulley. I guess my hands are too big. So I used a catfishing rig to pull the belt through. I fed the rig, hook first between the pulleys, hooked the belt and pulled it up between the pulleys! Worked like a charm. The rest was relatively easy. Thanks for giving me the confidence to do this job. I know a shop would have charged me at least $50 to do it.

Worked great for my 92 300D 2.5 turbo as well... essentially the same setup up front. Amazed and how easy the belt goes on an off with it loose!

I admit, I took the fan off anyway.... Thanks!

I suppose it's doable, but the fan is so easy to take off (with the proper tools) and it makes the whole job so much easier that I don't even know why this is being discussed.

Theres no way I could take my fan off in 5-10 minutes.

Like Cal, after putting the belt down around the fan, I lay it in place and then tie a string to the belt and pull it up between the tight spot between the fan clutch and balancer pulley's and then slip it over the roller pulley. Doesn't take much more than 5-10 minutes start to finish usually.

I never timed myself, but I've done it so many times that I could probably have the fan off in 2 minutes. To be honest I've never attempted to do the belt with the fan in place so I'm not sure how difficult it would be, but having the fan out of the way certainly gives you more room and makes the job more comfortable.

I'm thinking there MUST be more room on the 606.912. On mine, the fan is way inside the shroud and there isn't anough room for a 1/4" drive rachet and bit between the fan and radiator nor can you see the fan bolts. I think it took me over an hour to get those 3(?) screws out the first time and longer to put them back in when I did my tensioner pivot arm and that was with the rad cross member and shroud removed AND the radiator pulled as far forward as it would go. Lost some skin that day.

Do you have MB's stubby socket for the fan clutch bolt and the water pump locking tool? That's what I use and I only remove the fan clutch bolt, not the 3 little fan bolts. I don't know if the NA OM606 has more room in this area, but I doubt it.
