In some states it is not legal to drive a car without a working speedometer. So you could get a ticket for this if stopped.

One thing you don't want to do when stopped for speeding is volunteer that your speedometer doesn't work right. Then you've got two tax/tickets to pay.

Although around here getting your speedometer calibrated (or just having the mechanic SIGN that he calibrated it) is one way to have a ticket thrown out in court, on the grounds that you really didn't know your speed.

In this state (California) and probably others you are responsible for your speed whether you have a speedometer or not and whether it is working correctly or not. You might get a sympathetic judge to throw out such a charge, depending on the circumstances.

Oh yes, you're also required to have a speedometer in the car. When my 87's was out for odometer repair (I sent just the speedo unit, protected the needle by taping a small box over it) I mounted my GPS on the dash, used it as the speedo. Whether a cop would have accepted it is another question, but I never got to find out.

I'd just drive it without the cluster. I drove my SD with a dead speedo and every other guage was flacky for two years.

Hmm, just goes to show you every state is different. When i got my 70 in a 55, the lawyer told me "Since this is your first offense, we should be able to get it reduced at least below insurance point without any trouble, you won't even need to go get your speedometer calibrated".

Reduced to "improper equipment" with me never having to go to court. Didn't touch the insurance and I therefore still have a car

Seems a little silly, why bother going to court over a speeding ticket unless you were caught going ridiculously fast (in which case the speedometer excuse probably won't help anyway)?

I sent you a PM just now. Let me know how best to coordinate a pickup (and delivery of your favorite 12 pack that you can enjoy while your part is loaned out). This weekend it probably best for me since I don't get off work until 6 during the week.

I've got the MB tool, so it should take less than 5 min to pull the cluster and disconnect it.
Cluster in hand and should be at the selected drop off site tomorrow morning for you to pick up Friday.

I lost my cell ph in the process of pulling it. I'm going back up there today to see how much bovine abuse it may have received in 24hrs. Hopefully its safe in the SD parts car.

Speedometer..............Dallas driving.............ticket for speeding? Haven't driven in Dallas lately, have you?

I drive in Dallas 3-5 days a week and you would have to be flying low at 25-30mph+ over posted speed in most cases to be noticed. A bunch of folks there think they drive 200mph cars. Unless, of course, you are a single occupant car in the waste-of-taxpayer-dollars, politically correct HOV lane.

Unless it's a severely low revenue month, all the police are busy in Oak Cliff.

Now I know where the oil on EVERYTHING under my dash came from...
